Hi everyone,
I am planning a trip to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore in Feb 2013. We are 4 in family including 2 daughters (8 & 17 yrs old). I intend staying for 13 days: 5 nights in Thailand, 4 nights in Malaysia and 3 nights in Singapore (flexible). I will arrive in Bangkok and travel by train down to Singapore. I am browsing internet but getting confused as to "where to go". My interests include children related activities, shopping, sight seeing, beach (I want to visit just one beach but that must have coral reef, diving and beautiful sight seeing). I would request all fodorians to help me in planning my visit. Thanks to all of you in advance.

I'm doing a trip to Thailand/Malaysia/Singapore next month. Starting with 3 nights in Bangkok then 4 nights in Penang, Malaysia, 4 nights in Singapore and then 2 weeks in the south of Thailand.
You really aren't going to find your beach with coral reef and diving on this trip. While Koh Tao does offer diving, it would mean an expensive flight from Bangkok (only Bangkok Air flies this route) then a boat to Koh Tao. This would take up your whole 5 days in Thailand. So either skip the beach or skip Malaysia.
I'd also point out that taking the train from Bangkok to Singapore is time consuming (two days). With a mere 13 days on the ground, unless you are train fanatics, I'd highly recommend that you fly. It will be faster and probably cheaper. There are a couple of budget airlines that fly this route.
Note that qw's recommendation for priceline requires you to bid on an unknown hotel. SOme people are comfortable with that, some not.
Thanks a lot for your replies. Really helpful to finalize my itinerary.I have decided to skip coral reef adventure in Thailand. Can someone tell me any coral reef beach in Malaysia or Singapore? And also advise me for a quiet but beautiful beach in Thailand that can easily be reached.
I am also reconsidering to travel by air instead of traveling by train to save time.
Thanks for advising me for "Chatrium Suites Riverside", I like its location as well as its prices are also within my budget.
the easiest beach to get to that is nice from bkk would be hua hin...
i love the hyatt hotel there..
No coral reef beaches in that part of Malaysia and none in Singapore. The beach that is easy to reach in Thailand is Hua Hin, but it is not as beautiful as the island beaches.
Dear Kathie,
Thanks a lot for your value able advise. Keeping your advise on beaches in mind I have settled for Koh Phi Phi beach at Krabi. From here I am planning to go by boat to Phuket and from Phuket I will fly to Kuala Lumpur. Any advise on a beach in Phuket? Is it worth visiting Phuket from Krabi or otherwise?
I prefer to avoid Patong beach when in Phuket. For me, Kata or Kata Noi would be the final choice. I like Mom Tri's Boathouse, Mom Tri's Villa Royale, and the Katathani Resort. I have not idea about the reefs/diving, as I am not a swimmer.
Thanks for your advise on Phuket beaches
