hi guys!
i'm planning on flying to Kuching for a 10-day trip to Sarawak, going north, doing some trips upriver, stay at longhouses and visit Niah/Mulu caves. (i hope i can make it in such a time frame!)
after that (on the 11th/12th day) is it practical to fly out from Brunei which seem closer on the map, instead of returning to Kuching?
or perhaps do this trip in oposite way, so fly in to Brunei and out from Kuching .
previous postings mention that road transport is slow and difficult up there.
after Sarawak i'm going to Singapore, so the budget choise of flying out seems to be Kuching. Miri seems not (which is also near Mulu) and i'd avoid an extra flight Miri -KK / Kuching because i 'll have so many flights already, so better do that overland, from Mulu to exit point.
i hope this question is not very complicated! what do you suggest?
many thanks
Nikos

Hi Nikos,
I've only done Sabah to Brunei overland (well actually by boat from Labuan) but I suspect it's even more awkward from Sarawak. Besides, Brunei is best avoided unless you can get there and fly out same day - it is an expensive place!
I do recollect that internal flights within Malaysia are excellent value - for instance I flew from Bintulu to Kuching on a whim (bought the ticket at the airport) to avoid a long journey by road, and there are daily direct flights between Kuching and Johor Bahru. Just take a bus from there to Singapore.
There are probably flights from Miri to Kuching as well. I would spend some time on the Malaysian Airlines website to see what the possibilities are.
Cheers.
Afterall's idea of expensive may be different to mine. I was in Brunei a couple weeks ago and thought it relatively inexpensive. I was expecting something more on par with Singapore, which is definitely isn't (by at least half).
Royal Brunei is rather cheap for a full service airline, so if it works for you, I'd say go for it. I've been looking at visiting Kota Kinabalu, and it looks like the cheapest and easiest way to do it is to fly to Bandar Seri Begawan and then connect on to KK.
thanks guys, i got the idea.
flying out from Brunei as an oportunity to stay a couple of nights there seems atractive to me.
in this case the main problem is the slow transport from miri to brunei's capital.
perhaps you have any knowledge of express-bus or sth? (schedule-cost-web site would be great great info)
