Trip To Asia For a Month In the Summer
Hello All,
I would like to plan a trip to asis for the summer for my family. At the time my 2 kids will be 8 and 3.
I would like to do extended stays in several places possibly, thailand, singapore, china and japan(Maybe 1 week each). If anyone knows of a place where we could possibly do customizable packages or has any ideas on how we could make this work it would be really helpful.

A week in each of four countries? I suppose it could work if you stayed in one place in each country, but neither you nor your children will get any real sense of the culture of a place in that time. It would be better, I think to focus on one or two countries and visit several places in each country.
China is enormous, and you could easily send a month there. Japan is a complex society, you could spend a week in say, Tokyo or Koyto or travel a bit for two weeks. Singapore is a city state, and while it has some interesting things to see and do, many people would find a week there to be a bit much. Thailand would be a good option for your children - good tourism infrastructure, lots of places to go. You could easily spend your month is Thailand.
I think you need to start by deciding where you want to go - what are the most important things you want to do/see/experience? From there you can decide on specific locations. Once you know where you are going, the planning is easy. No need for a package tour.
Have you ever been anywhere in Asia? I'd suggest you start with some guidebooks. Borrow some from your library and once you know where you want to go you can buy guidebooks for the country or countries that you will visit.

Welcome to Fodors. I agree with everything Kathie wrote. Saying you want to spend a week in China is like saying you want to spend a week in the USA.
Why do you want to visit Asia? Why those four countries? Where else have you traveled? And where else have you traveled with your kids? The pollution in China might be a consideration with your youngest.
You could easily spend four weeks in China, or maybe two weeks in China and two in Japan. But you don't need as long for Singapore, which is small and compact.

Thanks for the reply. It will actually be our first trip outside the US. I have friends that stayed for a few months in Thailand and loved it so that might be an option. I was thinking of renting a house for a month and making excursions around asia but having our home base for that time in Thailand. But yes, much research will be undertaken so we can decide more of what we want to do.

Renting a house in Thailand for a month to use as a base for excursions around Asia is still overly ambitious and probably unrealistic. You'd still be paying rent in Thailand while taking long and expensive flights elsewhere. Bangkok to Tokyo is 6 hours by air; Bangkok to Shanghai is 4 1/2 hours.
More practically, you could stay primarily in Thailand, visiting two or three places in that country, and make shorter trips to nearby countries such as Laos and/or Cambodia.
For a first trip outside the US with two young children, I'd advise you to scale back.
And while researching, check July-August temperatures at your destinations.

July and August are getting into the wet season in Cambodia and Laos (and probably Thailand). However I like the previous poster's suggestion to go to Thailand with trips to Cambodia and/or Laos. Both countries are fairly laid back but it will be hot. Whereabouts are you traveling from as I find it takes a while to acclimatize?
