My husband and I have a month for Thailand, wehave been to Bangkok before for a few days but this time we would prefer to have maybe a week to ten days in the beach area, week in Chaing Mai and a trip to Cambodia. We would prefer to go without bookings but is this difficult being we will be there from the 15th December over Christmas. We thought we would start with the beach area as this may be the more difficult one to get accomodation, thinking of Koh Lanta area, any recommendations for simple but good accomodation not four and five star hotels.
Should we book before going or can we take a punt at this time of the year and any suggestions where to go for Christmas Day.
Thanks
trip planning for Thailand in December

Cambodia is becoming increasingly popular - even if u wing it on hotels, u could have a problem getting the flights of your choice as there are limited Bkk Air flts daily - flying from Bkk gves u the best options. I would book this leg at least even if u decide to keep the rest on the spur.
from dec 20 to jan 5 hotels are often hard to get...i would reserve in advance for those dates...
think about splitting your week up north between CM and chiang rai...the anantara hotel in chiang saen is beautiful...
