Trekking in Nepal

I am hoping to get to Nepal for an Everest Base Camp circut in April 1999, but looking at the costs of organized tours, I may not have enough saved until the year 2050. I am planning on going to Nepal alone, but do not want to trek alone. I hear all the wonderful things about meeting folks in Kathmandu. I have read all the books. I have contacted many different tour companies here in the US, and I don't know where to go from here. My folks will not let me leave the country if I am just going to "fly by the seat of my pants" in Nepal. Any ideas or suggestions?
