Travelling to Malaysia with an invalid Australian Passport

Hello!
My family and I are currently in Krabi, Thailand from
Australia. This coming weekend we are supposed to be flying to KL, however mine and my two brothers passports are 9 days short of the 6 month validity period and therefore we can't web check in. If we're able to get to KL, possibly by checking in at the airport, can anyone advise what will happen in KL when it's realised our passports are short of the 6 months? My parents passports don't expire in the next 6 months so we are hoping this helps our situation? My dad and brothers are due to fly out 24 hours after landing in KL and my mum and I are flying out 3 days later. Will we be made to fly out straight away? Will we be allowed to stay as we've got flights booked back to Australia? Thanks!

It is very likely the airline won't let you board the flight from Thailand to KL in the first place. Airlines won't check you in if they suspect you won't be admitted to your destination country since it would be their responsibility to fly you back.

IME your problem will be with the airline departing Thailand who could refuse you boarding as it is there responsibility. The reality is that Malaysian immigration probably wouldn't be bothered as you have tickets out of the country within 6 months. If Air Asia is your carrier, I wouldn't hold out too much hope as they tend towards the strict interpretation of the rules. Anyone else and you may be able to persuade them with a combination of one or more of abject apologies/feigned surprise/a well concocted sob story! Is your mum able to break down in tears at will? If refused ask to speak with a senior person as there is often something that can be done is you insist politely and get yo speak with te right person.

An alternative would be to get to KL by train which is easy enough and cross at a land border where immigration tends to be less strict.

If it were me (and it has been at different borders in the past) I think I would just try and brazen it out.

Good luck nad do let us know how it turns out.

I'm also guessing that you won't be allowed to board the plane in Thailand. You may need to re-book yourselves to fly home to Australia from Bangkok.

There is an Australian embassy in Bangkok, and they may possibly be able to issue you a new passport. However, I would contact them and make sure they can do it for you before heading up there. There are cheap flights on Air Asia that can get you from Krabi to Bangkok.

I vote with all the previous posters here. I doubt you would be able to board your flight to KL. In addition to the person checking you in for the flight, there is also immigration, and you just never know. No, I wouldn't chance it.

Do not risk it. Doubt they will even let you into KL. Your best bet is to try to check into the Australian embassy and see if they can help. If not you need to get on a flight back home. You should always make sure your passport is valid beforehand.

AndrewMartin: You are a little late to the party. The OP (per another thread) needed to fly out late last month. Most likely we shall never know what happened . . .
