Traveling with 2 Teenagers in China & Hong Kong

Hi All -

We have been enjoying reading the trip reports of many travelers here and plan to post our own trip report when the time comes.

Question about Hong Kong & China: we are planning a 3 week trip this summer (2009) with our two boys who are 16 and 13 years old. Trying to decide if we should spend the entire 3 wks in HK & China, or if we should spend less time in China and try to visit Thailand.

We are leaning towards traveling on our own (so many great ideas & advice in the trip reports) that we feel we can manage ok without an organized tour. Besides, we're not the "bus tour" type family and would hate having to stick to a tight schedule.

Things we like to do with the kids include: biking, cooking, painting, rafting, going to cultural events, things with lots of music, etc. We're also big "foodies"

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I think you can go to Yangshuo, where you can enjoy riding, rafting, and the cultural show: Impression of Liu sanjie. Liu sanjie was a famous woman in Guilin, who was good at singing.

My only suggestion is:
ignore advice from Chinese travel agents.

china is a bit different from many other asian locations, but there is plenty for a family to do....i think if it were me i would try to fly into beijing and fly home from hong kong...

the boys would love the tera cotta figures in xian i think....lots to do in beijing....shanghai might hold interest for them to (you could fly into there)...

i think a week in each place would be good and take day trips outside where they could do more roaming and adventure things....

zverybestfamily= We finished our DIY trip in Sept and we loved every minute of it. Well, I would have skipped the rash but other than that... Our trip included Beijing, Xian, Yangshuo, and Hong Kong. I posted a very long, excruciatingly detailed trip report when I got back. It may give you some ideas.
If one ut a gun to my head and made me pick just one place then I would have to choose Yangshuo. We really had a great time there. Anyone can do a DIY as long as you pack your sense of humor and patience, IMHO.
