Travel India solo

My teaching contract in South Korea will end in December, and I was planning on traveling through India starting in January. I read that transportation in India is expensive, so I want to limit my traveling, to get more for my money. I want to fly into Mumbai in January and will be leaving from Varanasi to Nepal in about March. Places I was interested in are also Delhi, Dharamsala, and Jaisalmer, but I am willing to cut down this list. Which places should I see, how long should I stay in each area, and what should I anticipate to pay? I'm a solo female 23 year old hoping to travel cheap.

Greetings, Ellisbell. Travel in India is NOT expensive. Where did you read that?
Tehr;'s no reason you can't see all those places, and more, in a month.

Frankly, you will not find much about budget travel especially for you age group, on the Fodors India board. Instead, check Indiamike website, where you will get loads more information.

It sounds to me like you'll benefit by not locking yourself into a fixed itinerary. In my experience, India is an easier place to travel spontaneously than many. I suggest you determine where you might like to go but leave yourself open to the possibility of staying longer in some places, fewer days in others you thought you'd love and don't as much. That, for me, is a benefit of a longer trip like yours. You'll also meet people as you go who will recommend stops you've never heard of and these detours may be the highlights of your time in India.

Like anywhere else, it depends on how you travel. Five star hotels, hotel meals and a dedicated car and driver can be expensive (although not as expensive as a lot of places). But you can sleep for a lot less, eat for a lot less and take trains for less.

Suggest you visit seat61.com for info on trains.

I - older female - have done two solo trips to India, one for ten weeks and one for six, traveling mainly by train. However, with the increase in attacks on foreign tourists I am somewhat reluctant to do so again (see http://www.fodors.com/community/asia...ndia-again.cfm ). You might look into tours with an outfit like Intrepid.

Flying to New Delhi makes more sense than Mumbai, unless your are specifically inclined/compelled to do so.Most of the areas you are interested in would be better accessible from Delhi, keeping the city as a base.

I see that you have 2 months, so a comprehensive plan needs to be worked out, the detailing can be worked out in stages once the places are decided.

A provisional plan could look like this, probably broken into 3 stages.

1) Delhi-Rajasthan with Agra ( Taj Mahal ) included.

2) Delhi- Himachal Pradesh ( Dhamashala) on the way a visit to the Golden Temple. Towards the lower reaches of the Himalayas, Shimla back to Chandigarh towards Hardwar and Rishikesh and back to Delhi.

3) the third leg could be towards Varanasi

Go through guide books.it'll give you a lot of information,it'll probably help you list places enroute, it gets a lot easier to advise once the plans are fine tuned.Expect, expert hands-on experience on this forum, only if the questions are specific and to the point such as route plan, hotels, transport food and so on.

Happy planning.
