Travel in India

Many companies offer tours in India: can anyone recommend a travel agency actually located in India offering such a tour. I heard there are some that are very good and less costly but have no contacts. Thanks.

Where oh where in India do you want to travel? Local travel agents are just that...local to a certain city.

Please offer up more details for us to help you better.

Vinstring travel, compass travel, Castle & King are three that do both independent and group tours in India, and get pretty good reviews here/. I've used both Compass and Vinstring. Vini at Vinstring specializes in mid to budget travelers and will do a custom itinerary or hook you up with a group.

If you just have a week or two and want to do the Golden triangle (Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur), vini would be good, but you can do this without paying for an agent.

I highly recommend you contact Narender at [email protected].

He is a driver and will quote you a price for him to drive you from city to city and to all the tourist spots in those cities. Let him know if you want him to arrrange tour guides for all or just some of the days. You can also hire him by the the day in Delhi if you just want an honest driver to take you around shopping or sightseeing.

Tell Narender you got his name from Lucy in Hawaii. He has been our driver on several trips, and is wonderful. Cautious driver, very polite, always on time, clean car, no pushy taking you to commission stops, and interesting guy too.

You can make your own hotel reservations, or he can do that as well. I do my own, as Indian hotel are mostly on-line and easy to book.

If you give us some info on your budget, interests, and dates, you'll get plenty of tips here on hotels and sights many of us.

How long will you be in India? During what month will you be there?

Delhi-Agra-Jaipur is a good combination introduction to India.

If you share more info we can help you get an itinerary together.

Will be travelling alone or with others? You can put a lot of this kind of trip together yourself, much more easily than you might think.

We used Castle and King in Dec. 2007. I highly recommend them. We booked a 16 day trip with them and they went above and beyond.

I recently returned from a trip to India and was fortunate to use the services of Faith Pandian at Indianpanorama (also called Window to the World).

Faith is amazng: intuitive, encouraging, sensitive to clients' wishes...and has GREAT prices!! She and her staff were avaiable and helpful in so many ways, both before and during the trip. I rarely use travel agents any more, anywhere but am sooo glad i used her to help with this trip. The Indianpanorama driver who took us between towns, and was with us while in towns, was excellent. How she got us into the hotels we stayed at, with meal plans, for the price we had, is still a wonder to me. (Her price was less than half, for better and more complete itinerary, than using another local agent...or trying to put it together myself.
Her company's main office is in Trichy but has district offices all over India--North and South.
I heard about Faith from folks on Indiamike and am glad to spread the word here, as I honestly think having her help made a big difference in our level of trip enjoyment.

I used an agency based in Jaipur called "Indian Moments". This was my very first trip out of the U.S. (and solo to boot), so I was more than a little nervous. They were so flexible, they changed any little thing about the tour that I wanted to. Being my first time to India, I travelled the "Golden Triangle" (this being Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra). I did my research, so I knew what to expect in terms of culture shock, touts, etc. I had a wonderful time, and I'm actually using them again this May for another 2-week solo trip (keep in mind that May is the "low season" for most of India, so the temperature was insanely hot but the hotel prices were much less inexpensive than they normally would be). Most tours, especially individually tailored ones, can be adjusted to stay within anyone's budget. I believe my tour was for two weeks and was about $1500.
Hope this is of any use.
