Transportation to mt koya-san from Osaka

We will be traveling to Koya-san from Osaka and will have a 3 week Japan pass. We are confused as to which train to take there and which is covered by our pass. Also, if the rapid speed train is not covered, but is not too expensive, we may want to opt for that as my husband does not want to stay overnight. I know...a great experience will be missed, but he does not want to sleep in the temples. We have been looking at train schedules and there is conflicting info.

Explained in detail below. Your JR pass is useless for this trip

Your JR pass could save you ¥180 each way between Osaka station and Shinimamiya!

Completely governed by your interests of course, but I'm not sure I'd bother to include Koya-san if you're not overnighting there. Certainly the cemetary is beautiful, but you won't really get to experience much of the temples, and it's a convoluted (but beautiful) journey to do twice in one day.

I'm glad I spent the night on Koya-san, but there are, IMO, things well worth seeing there even without an overnight stay, if you are willing to deal with the long transportation legs to and fro. JMO.
