Transportation HongKong-hotel to hotel

We are arriving a bit late (~9:30ish) in the evening and we decided to stay at Novotel Citygate near the airport overnight before transferring to another hotel in Causeway Bay the following day for the next 2 nights. Since Novotel is near the airport, we can get a taxi to go there; however, is there a way for us to do it cheaper than getting a cab from Novotel to our hotel in Causeway Bay? I thought of using the Airport Express, but does that entail going back to the airport and getting it there? We are 3 people with 1 luggage each (22") and 1 carry-on. Also the reason we decided to stay at Novotel is that its in Tung Chung near the Po Lin monastery, so we thought of going there the next day before checking in at our hotel in HK Island.Thanks.

The Novotel Citygate is connected to the Tung Chung MTR station. Take the Tung Chung line MTR to Hong Kong, transfer to Central, and take the Island line three stops to Causeway Bay.

The walk between the Hong Kong and Central stations are about 10 minutes. If that's too much walking, you can get off the Tung Chung line at Lai King, transfer to the Tsuen Wan line. Take that Admiralty and transfer to Island Line. Problems with this method are that 1) it's slower; 2) the trains are much more croweded on the Tsuen Wan line, and you're unlikely to get a seat when getting on at Lai King. So, more standing, less walking.

The most direct way, is to take the Citybus route E11.

The stop is across from the Tung Chung MTR Exit D, just across the bridge from the Novotel. It's cheap, relatively fast, and single ride with no walk.

Sorry, forgot to mention. If you go to that link I provided, it lists all the stops. You'll be getting on at Stop #10, for the bus going from AsiaWorld Expo to Tin Hau MTR.

Stop #23 Yee Wo Street is right in the heart of Causeway Bay.

Without knowing exactly where you hotel is in Causeway Bay (which is a large district), I would generally agree that the bus is better. Do NOT take the MTR at rush hour it is jammed jammed jammed, and with luggage will be a nightmare. That means don’t take it between about 4:30/5pm and 7:30 pm. There are also escalators to go up and down to trains and then you will have some stairs to negotiate to get up to the street level.

Really with 3 people you can take a taxi as the 3 of you can sit in the back seat and whatever luggage won’t fit in the trunk can go in the front seat. The fare will be about HK$400, split 3 ways this isn’t really that expensive and much less hassle, IMO.

It’s nice to do Po Lin, but kind of a hassle to switch hotels IMO after only one night; esp when you go also do Po Lin from Hong Kong Island itself, it’s not really that far “back out” to the airport area if you are thinking about taking the cable car. If you are taking the ferry, Causeway Bay is not really far from the ferry piers.

If you want to take the cable car, you can make a reservation, that might be something to really consider, because lines for tickets can be quite long. You do have to wait to get into a car, but that line is much shorter than the line for tickets. Take a look at http://www.np360.com.hk/html/eng

If you go early (right at 10am) on a non-holiday weekday for the cable car, I doubt you'll need reservations. And the Novotel is convenient for that.

If you decide to just take a taxi from Novotel to Causeway Bay, ask the hotel concierge, semi-secretly, if he/she can arrange a "20% off" or "30% off" cab for you. It is an open secret in HK that many cab drivers work that way for longer trips like yours. Only problem is that some cabs may rather wait at the airport for a full-fare ride rather than a discount one. I am not familiar with the situation from Tung Chung, but you can definitely ask the concierge about that.

Come to think of it, discount taxis from Airport/Tung Chung definitely exist. They even operate out of the airport at a parking garage for the Regal Hotel or somewhere like that.

30% off and half the tunnel fees, you should be able to get to Causeway Bay for under HK$300. Not bad for three people. Still a lot more than the bus, however.

As always thank you so very much, rkkwan and Cicerone! Our hotel in Causeway Bay is L'Hotel Causeway Bay, 18 King's Road--I believe its a fairly new hotel and we did get a very good rate on it. Anyway, we will shoot for a taxi from Tung Chung to L'Hotel. I believe, if everything goes as planned, we'll be finish with Po Lin etc. around 1:00pm. We will be there on a Thursday, so maybe we don't need reservation for the cable car?? Thanks again. I appreciate your help.

L'Hotel is on the East side of Victoria Park, and that area is considered "Tin Hau" by locals. If you take the E11 bus, just stay on till the terminus. Just steps from the hotel.

One more question rkkwan since you got me interested in taking the bus instead of a tax1: From Novotel Citygate, we walked across the bridge to the Tung Chung MTR. Is that in Tat Tung Road, stop #10 or Mei Tung Street, stop #9 or Shun tung rd, stop #11? Thanks.

Sorry, rkkwan, delete my questions above. I re-read your reply earlier on and you said that we should be getting on the bus at stop #10. Thanks again.

JoyC - I'm not an expert of Tung Chung, but from all the maps, satellite images, and even photos of my own, I can tell you this:

- The Novotel is connected to the Citygate shopping center via a enclosed bridge over the Airport expressway.

- The Citygate shopping center is adjacent to the Tung Chung MTR terminus.

- Across Tat Tung Road from the MTR terminus is the Fu Tung Shopping Center. There's a footbridge that goes across Tat Tung Road.

- The E11 stop is on the Fu Tung Shopping Center side of Tat Tung Road.

--> Therefore, from the Novotel, just walk back to Citygate, then walk THROUGH the MTR station, and cross the bridge to Fu Tung Shopping Center. Then make your way down to the ground level for the bus stop.

[The NP360 Skyrail cable car terminus is also adjacent to the MTR station. You don't need to cross any roadway to go among all these areas.]

It's a good choice if you're in Hong Kong for only overnight and you have no or little interest in going to the city. Otherwise, you can just stay in the city.

Okay, in the other thread, you said you're arriving at 12:30p. In that case, I suggest staying in the city.

Good afternoon from California and thanks for taking the time to respond
I am sincerely impressed at the level of response and the goodwill that seems to emanate from this thread . I think it makes one feel like helping out others in similar situations - Great Job
With regards to my particular problem - I have just confirmed with american airlines the tickets on my frequent flyer award - Because its a frequent award I get a bad itinerary I guess . Thats why I get into Hong Kong at 10:30 pm and leave at 9:15 pm
Anyway I guess if I want to see a little of Hong Kong I will not get much sleep .
I am not sure if the Mrs will want to look around -I shall be pushing to do something even if it takes an hour or so . I would imagine a taxi drive might cost a lot for an hour tour of the island ? Is it even possible ?
Will I be still on the same time lime as Bkk which is where I am coming from ?
This might be a mission impossible I understand.
I don't want to spend a lot of money if all I am doing is getting in bed and out again ?
Derek

Derek - Are you leaving HKG at 9:15am or 9:15pm? If 9:15pm, you have plenty of time next day to go around Hong Kong, and you should definitely get a hotel in the city.

If it's 9:15am, then forget it. Just get a room at the Novotel.

Hong Kong is an hour ahead of Bangkok.
