Top ten historical monuments in India - what is yours?

Recently I've come upon a nice list of historical structures in India. What I liked the most is that Victoria Terminus is on the first position, while most people would choose Taj Mahal. What do you think of the list? What would be yours?

I loved Mehrangarh Fort in Jodpher and Fatepur Sikri. Can't compare to Jaisalmer, however, as we didn't get there.

NandaDevi, the list is not mine, I just loved it and decided to share. And which monuments in the north you would recommend to see? TO be honest, have never been to the north.

Well, Taj Mahal is obviously my first in the list of top historical monuments in India. But other than that, there are also many more monuments which I like. Given below are the few monuments which I like:

1) Golden Temple: It is in Amritsar, Punjab. The temple was built in an island in Amrit Sarovar.
2) Qutub Minar: Located in New Delhi, it was built in 1193 by Qutab-ud-din Aibak Qutub.
3) Charminar: Constructed in 1591, Char minar is a mosque built by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah and is located in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.
4) Ajanta and Ellora Caves: Both are found in Aurangabad district in Maharashtra . There are 34 caves at Ellora dating from between the 6th and 11th centuries AD, and 29 caves at Ajanta dating back to between the 2nd century BC and 6th century AD.
5) Victoria Memorial: Located in Kolkatta, it still serves as a museum and a great tourist attraction.
6) Konark Sun Temple: It is a 13th century sun temple located in Odisha.
7) Hawa Mahal: Located in Jaipur, is was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799.
8) Khajuraho Temples: It is located in Khajuraho in Chhatarpur District, Madhya Pradesh and was built by Chandella rulers.
9) Gwalior Fort: Located in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, it was built by Raja Mansingh in the fifteenth century.
10) Mysore Palace: Popularly known as the Maharajah’s Palace, it is situated at the city center at Mirza Road in Mysore, Karnataka.

I agree totally with Qutab Minar in Delhi. I thought it was the most impressive sight in that city. The history is interesting and the park setting around it is lovely.

tanmaysharma1980, great list. I think there should be a separate list for caves in India though. I've never been to Ellora and Ajanta, but I was rather impressed by the Elephanta caves in Mumbai and Karla caves close to Lonavala.

The Mehengar Fort in Jodhpur is the best of all the forts in Rajasthan. It soars into the clouds.

Kumbhelgarh Fort in the Aravelli Hills is superb.

And don't forget the exquisite Jain temple at Ranakpur.

Yes, we also thought the Jain Temple at Ranakpur was magnificent, and definitely worth the time and trouble to get there!
