The latest "hip" place seems to be Thonglor.

Chinatown is always a good bet.

Victory Monument is very "local".

The street food around the Soi Thonglor area is well known but I would not call it "hip". The restaurants located around Soi Thonglor are the hip or in places but expensive.

Here's a guide I found online for Soi Thonglor and Sukhumvit Soi 36 and 38 street food with a map:
http://importfood.com/thonglor_guide.html

There's a new mall call the Central Embassy which has a very unique food court in the basement. All the food are Thais and the kiosks are grouped representing food from the different regions of Thailand. I've tried a few and they are very good and will give you a good idea of the different food taste of the regions. Also, hygiene and cleanliness is very good there.

I recently found this site which seems to have some useful info on street food. http://www.eatingthaifood.com there is also a free ebook guide you can download.

On the basis that you can only be in one place at once, and getting around solo could lead to possible interesting encounters after dark, where are you planning on staying?

Being close to the Skytrain or Underground (Subway) will get you around quickly. Here's a couple of excellent links with lots of info about getting around...

http://www.bangkok-city.com/go/
http://bangkok.sawadee.com/mrta.htm

After dark I'd stick to the Skytrain or BTS, with a taxi back up. If you take taxis it's a good idea to have a card from your hotel with directions on it written in Thai.

Last para, I meant "Skytrain or Underground, with a taxi back-up".

And note that the public ferries stop running at about 1900.

The reason I used the term "Hip", for Thonglor, is that soi 38 is really getting so much mention on the internet. I would imagine that, at this point in time, its "too" well known.

Thanks for the tip on the Embassy. I'll have to check out the food court.

Went to the (awful) American Rib Company, at the Embassy for Mom's birthday dinner, but didn't wander around the mall - strapped for time.

Got lo love Mark Wien's, of eatingthaifood.com. His signature "orgasm", after the first bite, is a crackup!

BTW, Mark Wien's http://migrationology.com is a bit less cluttered.

Thanks very much, everyone. Very nice responses!! I'm going to stay in Thonglor/Ekkamai..

Curt- I'm staying in that area due to its supposed hipness. Want to be near some good lounge/bars in addition to good food! Funny u bring up Mark.. Now we see what his wife sees lol. Thanks for the links

Hanuman- Thank u very much for the info and link. Love to try the Central Embassy! Glad to hear the hygeine is good

Crellston- Thank u very much as well!

LL- I appreciate that helpful info very much. Will keep all in mind. I'm usually accompanied by my Thai wife (she did all the logistical stuff when we were there) but we split up recently...nonetheless, I still love Bkk very much.

Thanks again, everybody.. TC

Sabai Jai Ekamai soi 1 is a great inexpensive restaurant. Huge menu incl some rare jungle food.

Street food is everywhere in Bangkok. Just walk around and try things.

At night I like to walk 5kms in any direction and see what I can find.

Getting off topic slightly, I did the morning tour with http://bangkokfoodtours.com and found it excellent. They also do evening tours, one through Chinatown which I hope to do on a future trip to Bangkok. You can also combine it with a bike riding tour. I gave this a miss and did an evening ride with Spice Roads. I thought a rest to digest my food would be a good idea. The ride was only about 15 kms so not very strenuous.

Silver wool, that sounds like a great idea! Will look into. I'm a little nervous venturing out solo, without my wife, like I used to do, so this sounds like fun. I appreciate u mentioning this . Thxx again..

If u have a hotel card you can just give it to a cab driver to bring u back.

Another place I like is Raintree Pub which has live folk music and good food. Its on rangnam rd near victory. That area has good street food and restaurants. Saxophone Pub nearby has jazz and blues too.

Can catch skytrain to victory.
