We have just found out we're getting to go to Tokyo in early April. I'm looking for some pointers on the cultural highlights. We are big fans of the visual arts as well as drama, music and dance. We will probably only have one or two nights free so we want to select the very best things to see. The same goes for museums. Thanks in advance!

Lucky you. At that time you will probably be able to see the cherry trees in full bloom. I am sorry I can not help too much in the night-time culture area. I advise you visit the JNTO website, where they have a calender of events that may be helpful. After you are in town the Tokyo TIC (Tourist information Center) can provide information on events that are happening.

There are many festivals around the time of Cherry blossoms. You should really try to go a day or two earlier or stay a few days longer. It is such a long trip for only three free nights! If you do make it to Kyoto, the night-time temple illuminations are spectacular. They are only done in April and October. I don't know if they do any in Tokyo, but the TIC office should know.

Steve--I recommend going to Harajuku where you will find Meiji Jingu. It's one of the most famous shrines in Tokyo and you will probably see many cherry blossoms, people in traditional dress, and maybe even a wedding! There is also a famous iris garden, although I don't know if it will be open yet in April.
If I think of anything else, I'll let you know, but I would try to stop in Harajuku. Erin

I am a Japanese living in US. I am happy to give you advices to make your staying in Tokyo fun. As other people mentioned, early April is supposed to be the best time to see cherry blossoms. Since the best places to see the flowers downtown Tokyo depends on timing of your visits, I would ask some Japanese people where to go. If you like visual arts and are interested in traditional Japanese culture, I highly recommend that you go to see "Kabuki" held in Kabukiza close to Ginza. It takes more than 4 hours to see all acts, but I believe that you could buy a ticket by act in Kabukiza. If you have other questions, you could email to me.

I went to Kabukiza a few years ago, and you could buy a ticket for 1000-1500 yen anytime during the day. Only drawback is that you're seated far away from the stage. The good point is that you can stay as long as you want. Ask for an English pamphlet explaining the play. More information on this with JNTO or TIC, for sure.

The best museum in Tokyo is the history museum in Ueno Park. If I remember, correctly, the exhibits are described in English and Japanese. Some of the artifacts displayed are remarkable (e.g., religious carvings that are a thousand years old, etc.).

Ueno Park is also a great place to view the Cherry Blossoms, the best part of which is the celebrations.

Ueno Park is near the University of Tokyo where there may be some other events (dance, etc.) scheduled during your stay.
