Tokyo and Kyoto - Credit Card or Mainly Cash Only for Meals?

Hello Everyone!

I will be travelling to Tokyo and Kyoto later this year. Do most restaurants accept credit cards in the cities, and do they post the accepted forms of payment on the outside of the establishment?

Also, I am looking for some inexpensive meal options. I plan to have dinner at nice restaurants most nights, but I am looking for some cheap, but good, food options for breakfast, lunch and some of the dinners.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

In Tokyo and Kyoto you will be overwhelmed with the options to eat a cheap and very good meal. Food vendors of all Asian ethnicity and more are available throughout the two cities especially in and around the train stations and within the major covered shopping doris(streets). If they accept credit cards they will have the appropriate stickers on the entrance windows/doors or most often next to the cash register as you enter. When given your bill you will usually go to the register to pay and not pay at the table unless you are in a posh establishment.

The good thing about the cheaper places(as well as the expensive ones)in Japan is that many restaurants display plastic or wax replicas of their dishes at the entrance. These replicas serve both to entice and inform and can be especially helpful for foreign tourists who do not speak Japanese like me

Aloha!

Japan is mostly a cash country. Most cheap to moderate eateries do not take credit cards. So bring cash. The cheaper places, like noodle or rice bowl shops have ticket machines outside he store where you buy your meal tickets with coins.

Are ATMs available throughout the cities?
Do most of the higher-end dinner restaurants accept credit card?

Thanks for your responses!

Many Japanese ATMs do not accept cards from outside Japan. However, post offices and 7-Elevens have ATMS that accept foreign cards. The major airport have ATMS that accept foreign cards also.
