To Macau or Not to Macau

We will be in Hong Kong for 5 nights starting 25 January. Chinese New Year is January 28. We are thinking of going to Macau on January 27. We would book ferry tickets online in advance & make a dinner reservation. In terms of crowds is that a good idea to go on the 27? Or will the crowds be pretty bad then too? Over on TA a couple people are saying it will pretty much be a mob scene for CNY. We don't want to go to Macau on our first full day, January 26, and want to be in HK for the weekend, 28 & 29th. Thoughts?
