Tibet and BhutanTour

Hi All,

I am planning for a 10 days(max) trip to Tibet and Bhutan somewhere in Aug. Can some tour operators sent me some itinerary for that?

Would like to cover some main attractions like the Potala Palace and Tiger Monastery and experience the local culture.

Please quote the price for 2 Pax.

Thanks
Desmond Tan

You are going to try to visit both Tibet and Bhutan in a mere 10 days?

Be aware that you are required to use a Bhutanese Travel agency for the Bhutan portion of your trip.

You have a lot of research to do.

Thanks janisj
Maybe someone here knows of a tour agency that can do that?

Filmwill i believe you have better things to do than post such childish comments.

Kathie
I have seen a 4 days trip for tibet so i guess i can cater the rest of the days to Bhutan? I dun need to cover many places, just main attractions. And yes i am fully aware i need a Bhutanese travel agency. Was hoping if there is any recommendations for those whom have been there before.

We used Snow White Tours for Bhutan:

Highly recommended.

Destan,

You should read Craig's trip report too. Plus there is another fairly new one that was posted about a month ago. You can find it by searching for Bhutan under the search by country tab and then going down to the trip reports.

Good luck.

A four day tour of Tibet means you are flying in - no time to acclimate to the altitude. You may well spend your whole time there with altitude sickness. Six days in Bhutan is not much. I'd recommend you consider cutting Tibet and spending your 10 days in Bhutan.

Kathie, If that is the case it is better to go Bhutan first?

I tried to engage this travel china guide but they dont do Bhutan tours at the moment.

Thanks Kathie, Craig and Lolazahra. That is most helpful.

We spent 17 days in Bhutan and would have been happy to stay longer (see my trip report). We used the Noble Traveler as a tour guide agency and were tremendously impressed. We will use them again if we go back--the tour operator and guides were great and it felt like a big family, of which we were the prince and princess

We also think highly of John Leupold's Champaca Journeys (see website) John is smart, fun, has a Bhutanese co-leader, and amazing taste.

I'm afraid that going to Bhutan first won't help you much, as you'll still have to fly to Tibet - and I believe there are no such flights from Bhutan.

Under no circumstances would I use a Chinese agency to visit Bhutan. And the tour they outline is nothing that will give you any sense of Bhutan - or Tibet. If you are really interested in Bhutan and Tibet, do some more research and see what tour would give you what you are looking for. Part of the problem is that you are trying to see two places that are remote and have complex histories in just a few days. If you are only checking off boxes, it doesn't matter, but if you have a real interest in these countries and their cultures, you'll want more time and a really good tour company.

As others have said, 10 days is too short really to see much of either country. But if you're determined to go ahead, there is some value in going to Bhutan first and spending several days acclimatizing to the 7,000-8,000 ft altitude in Paro (the hike to Tiger's Nest goes up to about 9,000 ft) and Thimphu before flying into Lhasa (12,000 ft). You would have to fly from Paro to either Kathmandu by Druk Air or Delhi and from there via another airline to Lhasa. I've visited Bhutan and Tibet several times and been fortunate to have had no problems with the altitude (either flying in or taking the train from Xining) but altitude sickness can cause serious problems, so you would be well advised to consider getting altitude medication from your doctor.

UNLESS you have an allergy to sulpha!

I again agree that both countries in 10 days will leave you with being exhausted and not getting enough from either. And Kathie is right about Chinese perspective on Bhutan.
Think about getting in touch with tour operator of the Noble Traveler in Bhutan and also Champaca Journey. One advantage of Bhutan is I think after they finish improving the roads and can have full size buses, the feeling of being there will be not quite as magic. Right now there is not space for anything bigger than minibuses.
