The ROS or the Peninsula for our last 24 hour stay in Bangkok?

Both hotels have a rate that is quite similar. We need a 24 hr. rate. The ROS has exactly that, but at the Peninsula we will only be allowed in the room until 6 pm. Our flight is near midnight. I have heard that the pool at ROS is very nice. We will have been at the Peninsula for several days earlier in the month.

For those who know both places, could you help guide me to where YOU would rather spend your last day before a flight?

We MAY still do a little sightseeing, go out for a nice last meal. I really have no plans.

With those time restrictions, location, basic comforts and pool set up.. which one do you prefer?

Well I would rather stay at the Peninsula as it's a VERY luxurious hotel and I actually like the location. It's very easy to get to the sky train from the peninsula(as you will discover earlier in your stay) a direct little river boat, takes 5 minutes. For me the Pen in BKK is one of the best hotels in the city.
however if you are already staying T the Pen, maybe a staff somewhere else would be night. However I don't think the ROS is in the same league as the Pen.

I was thinking that.. I will have a couple hours with no room at the Peninsula in comparison to the ROS, but I assumed it was a nicer hotel. Will wait for a few more opinions but I appreciate your logic!

The Penn. hands down. I think it is an nicer property , and has a real feel of Lux. Nice things like electric curtains...nothing like laying in bed , pushing a button , the curtains open and there is the river and city below you. If you have an early AM flight, get them to send up a boxed breakfast to take with you. As the others on the plane are eating their rubber eggs, you will have fresh danish, nice jams, a hard boilled egg. Wonderful!

penn for sure... here's a plan... keep the room till 6...check out... have them hold the luggage... go someplace for a nice longish dinner, or stay there and eat at one of their nice restaurants, or go across to the lord jim at the oriental for dinner.... go back and collect your bags and head to the airport about 9ish... BINGO

The Pen is a much more luxe property. I find their location annoying, on the wrong side of the river, but I doubt that will be a problem for you.

But do I understand you correctly, that for your 24 hour rate at the Pen you can't get into your room until 6 pm? And then you have a midnight flight? If that is true, it sounds like you would be paying a lot for a what? three hour stay 6pm to 9 pm when you have to leave for the airport.

My decision would be heavily influenced by the convenience of their 24 hour package.

The pool at the ROS is lovely, located in a garden with both shady and sunny areas.

no.. we have our room from the night before and up until 6 pm the day we leave. We leave a few minutes after midnight ( but will not have a room after 6 pm at the Pen) whereas at ROS we would have our room from the night before until we left for the airport around 9 pm. Not sure it makes much difference..

For three hours, you're right, it shouldn't be the determining factor.

Oh my.... leigh.. please give your reasons..

I actually can play this by ear since the reservations are cancelable. When I get to BKK I can go take a look at the ROS one day and make up my mind about location, etc.. but on the other hand I know it is always nice to go back to a place where you have been well taken care of.

Even if you go out sightseeing or for dinner, you can leave your bags, then come back to the Pen and use the spa to clean up for your flight. They have showers, hot tub, steam room and cold tub, as well as hair dryers and all that.

Don't forget that you can take the boat over to their reception room on the other side of the river when you leave. If traffic ir really heavy on the bridge, having a car or cab pick you up there can cut about 10 minutes off the airport trip.

On the other hand, I've never stayed at the ROS, so a short visit might be a tempting way for me to try it out, especially if you are arriving from somewhere else anywhay. I'm not as fond of the ROS location less convenient, and their is just something about the Pen river views that I really like, but you never know till try someplace, do you? ;-)

Have you been to Bangkok before?

Have you considered spending your last night at a different location?

Perhaps amongst all the mega shopping malls at the Grand Hyatt or Centara Grand..... or maybe amongst the entertainment and restaraunt district at the Landmark.....or close to vibrant markets and the beautiful Lumphini park at the Dusit Thani.

Bangkok has more to offer than JUST the river and as you are already staying riverside for a portion of your trip, why not try someplace else for your final night? Just a thought.

Have stayed at the Peninsular a couple of times an there is no doubt it is a superb hotel (but not without its faults). Its main problem for me is location. The boat transfer is a novelty and works reasonable efficiently but it does add around 15 mins to your journey each time. ROS is not really in the same league but in a slightly better location for transport (on the "right" side of the river. Hanging around without a room waiting for a midnight flight even if only for a couple of hours is never pleasurable . I would go for the ROS.

Shanek makes a very valid point re experiencing another of the great hotels in the city. Conrad at All Seasons Place on Wireless Road is a great place to stay and has the advantage of being close to the Expressway for easy access to the airport. Novotel on Siam Square is very convenient at the junction of the 2 BTS lines with lots going on all around.
