Hi, We are in the process of planning our trip to Japan 12/19-1/3/15. Initially we wanted to stay for a night in the area of Hakone, 12/30-12/31, but the pickings were slim ,outdated and expensive, plus we were concerned there might be some difficulty getting back to Tokyo in a timely manner due to the holiday. For this reason, we currently have plans to go from Koya-san straight to Tokyo.
I understand that it is sometimes difficult to even see Fuji-san in the shinkansen because the trains are traveling so fast. I am now trying to figure out a way that my son can still see Mt. Fuji.
My question to the forum is where can we best see Mt. fuji? I heard that on a clear day the mountain could be seen from the Tokyo sky tree . I understand that there are some day trips but not sure what will be available since it is during the holidays .Is it worth taking a day trip by bus or train with a group? Has any one taken such a group tour? What did they do on the tour? Worthwhile?

You can often see it from places around Kamakura (e.g., Enoshima). I saw it several times when I was there a few weeks ago. Mornings are best.

Even though I spent a couple of days in Hakone, my only views of Fuji have always been from the train, on either side of Atami (south, or is it west?) of Tokyo.

Hi Icuy, interesting that you didn't see Mt. Fuji from Hakone. We had booked in a more isolated guest house that looked like it might have a good view , but the view shown on their web site had a lake in between so couldn't be from their place. sneaky, sneaky. Gora and many other guesthouses in Hakone faces east. Unless I am mistaken, you need to take the ropeway over the hill to see Fuji to the NW on the way down to Lake Ashinoko.

We could see Mt Fuji from our room at the Park Hyatt in Tokyo.

We had a great view of Fuji from our room and from the breakfast room at the Prince Park Tower in Tokyo.

We saw Fuji from the train a number of times. We had fabulous views from the Hakone ropeway as well as from our hotel in Hakone. But like all mountains, Fuji may or may not show itself no matter what you do!

While we saw Fuji from our hotel in Tokyo, it wasn't a fabulous view - too far away.

Mt Fuji would be seen from your ride on shinkansen, if you do not plan to move on 29 Dec.

If you happen to sit on an A seat (ocean side), the chance to see Mt Fuji would last about 1 min just before you pass the Shizuoka station (see map on this page).

About 7 min after you pass the Shizuoka station, Mt Fuji would be seen for about 4 min (longest, closest and biggest in shape). The locations are depicted by the red lines in the map on this site (almost at the end).

If your shinkansen is "kodama" and stops at the Shin-Fuji station, you chould see Mt Fuji while you are there. This is the easiest solution. Someone even dare to get off there and catch the next train.

You could also see Mt Fuji just after the Mishima station, but you should look back in this case (the most right arrow in the map on this page).
