I am just begining to look into a trip to Bangkok in Dec. I won't have much time to spend over there, but would like to visit either Singapore or Vietnam as well. If anyone is familiar with the transportation system, is it easier to travel between Singapore and Thailand or Vietnam and Thailand? Any suggestions for the best possible mode of transportation would be greatly appreciated!

Hi
I would choose Singapore if just for the convenience of it and travel on the train through southern Thailand and the Malay Peninsular. I did this trip about 20 years ago and absolutely loved and it is the absolute best way to see the countryside and very comfortable as well. Get a sleeper of course and ask around for which class of carriage as I went 2nd class because it was better. I was lucky to get information from people at the time who said that if you go 1st you get a room with one long seat so if you are not the one beside the window your view is not as good. In 2nd class everyone had a window seat and their own fan with their luggage beside them. During your evening meal the beds were made up and they were very comfortable. The views were lovely and I ate from all the vendors who came to the train at the stops. I would class that train ride as one of the World's best.
if u're not averse to flying, i think singapore or vn wd be equally convenient. at least 2 carriers service each route. i used to fly btwn saigon and bangkok regularly and the flight is only one hour; i'd imagine hanoi or singapore wdn't be much longer.
the destinations are vastly different, however. singapore is even more modern than bangkok, w/ highrises, air-conditioned malls, a subway system, worldclass department stores and every other person walking ard w/ a cell phone clamped to his ear. it also has interesting ethnic neighborhoods, which vn doesn't have.
in vn, hanoi is more old-world than saigon. i wd write off saigon for this reason. hanoi does have more french colonial flavor, more communist flavor (in bldgs, dress styles and attitudes) and fascinating shopping streets that specialize in one thing each. it's a pretty city w/ accessible lakes and parks. if u want somewhere that will contrast w/ bangkok, i'd go there.
