Thailand- not as good as advertised!!

From reading this message board you would think traveling to Thailand was as good as being in heaven- well I took that advice hook line and sinker- boy was I fooled!

Sure Thailand is great if you like smog, rows and rows of trash filled shantytowns, shop houses and tin roof buildings. What beauty there is is slowly being replaced by a huge growth in population and urban sprawl. Bangkok goes out 75 miles in every direction from the river. Phuket Island is mostly urban except for a small mountain area and Chiang Mai is not the little mountain community advertised but a huge sprawling million person merto area with serious pollution problems.

In the entire time we were in Thailand we saw no good parks, culture, shopping (other than the same trash in every store).

Thailand, ya sure!

i'm going to give u the benefit of the doubt and assume you're not another troll a la kevin and others.

i don't know what 'thailand' you saw or were expecting. anybody who has done ANY research at all knows it's a developing country -- and this message board reflects that. but there's also an awful lot of beauty and culture if u care to look. i for one love holidaying in chiang mai and phuket. i'd go back in a second. it sure as heck beats some of the cityscapes in the so-called "developed" countries.

I suspect "Bonnie" is a troll. No culture? No beauty? You must not have seen the same Thailand we saw. The jewel-encrusted temples, the quiet rivers, the bamboo-clad hills, the smiling and helpful people...everywhere.
We have to wonder, if you are not a troll, exactly where you went, what you did, what you liked.

I know we all feel compeled to answer this post. But I would hope that this would be the last post and we all no why.

bottom line: we all know why we come here---to learn from one another and to assist our fellow traveler in learning more about their destinations to help ensure rewaring and safe travels.

So Bonnie - I guess i won't run into you on the AMAZING floating markets of Thailand and to everone else don't waste you time replying to this one!

Safe travels everyone!

Why can't the people on this board allow someone to not like a place and tell people about it. I for one enjoyed my trip to Thailand but can see the perspective of Bonnie. Thailand along with all its beauty has lots of ugly scenes also! Most third world places do! To call it paradise does a dis-service to all the people who are planning a trip there expecting a hollywood version of a Southeast Asia fantasy land.

Thailand does have smog, ugly rows of shop houses that seem to go on forever, a terrible pollution problem and some serious poverty- these are ugly scenes.

Erin - i don't think anyone here has a problem with someone not liking a place. but speaking for myself, i've seen a number of threads posted which all follow a pattern: they seem to be deliberately provocative to try and draw a response. check back and see for yourself: "asian cities full of touts...", "china full of pollution...", blah blah blah. and now, "thailand not as good as advertised...". sounds suspicious to me...

you think like some of the ones that come from one prejudice educatinal planning use to think. that the poor and developing countries of the world have just the "bad" luck to have ugly and polution and poor every place. Thats one lost of time why dont you try to see good things in spite of bads why are you so negative! I think your life must be realy some bad thing for you to leave like you just see bad things and cant have the oportunity to see beaty . I hope God gives you the chance to know my country Brasil and see How beatiful we are just Like the wonderfull Thailand that you never have the realy oportunity to met!!!!

Like others, I suspect this is a troll. No one would say there isn't poverty in Thailand, but that's not all it is.

As for shopping - you didn't see any of the beautiful crafts? You must have worked hard to avoid them!

Perhaps those seeking the unblemished picture perfect rendering of foreign places should stick to the Magic Kingdom at Disneyworld, which manages to strip the unpleasant "reality" from life.

I go to Thailand and other developing countries to experience the chaos, the noise and the way people live, in slums or big houses next to each other. I want to taste the "unhygienic" delicious local cuisine and walk thru the crowded, jam-packed lively streets. I want to experience being harassed by peddlers and children trying to sell me things.I like talking to them do see a different perspective of life. These poor people are happier than many rich people I know.I want to be immersed in their culture of contradictions. If I wanted everything clean and orderly I would have stayed in Singapore or go to Australia or worse, Disneyland. To Bonnie and Erin, why don;t you just stay home in Utopia and watch telly?

Yep if you go to any city in the world and ask to be taken to the nearest KFC, Walmart, Macdonalds, Starbucks etc etc You will no doubt be taken to the very worst parts of the city

However, try reading the guidebooks a bit and you will find a fair bit of thailand doesn't have an American fast food joint on the corner.
