Thai Air to Return to JFK?

The oft-maligned Thai Airways is apparently talking about getting back in the New York (nonstop) flight market from Bangkok.

I know this'll be music to some of our East Coast friends' ears here. Personally, though, knowing how Thai operates, I wouldn't hold my breath until the flights actually start pulling up to the gates in New York.

Lots of talk of this over on flyertalk--thought I'd share with the group.

Maybe our friend Hanuman can translate the gist of the associated article below (written in Thai) about this new development:

Will,

With two new DD and DN eveything is possible at Thai. It's an interview with the new President of Thai and it does indeed contain a couple of paragraph about returning to New York. The reason is that Thai cannot offload or sell their A340-500s and 600s, they have 12 of them, so they must put it to good use. They will increase the seat capacities of both type of planes, which IMO means less comfort, and will change airport from JFK to Newark.

Not official yet but possible.

I wonder, though, Pook, what will happen to their A340-500s...they have 4 of them, right? 2 of them have to be used on the LAX-BKK route and the other 2 would then have to be used on the JFK route if they reinstate it.

So they'd have to take the other 2 A345s (currently not on the LAX route) out of rotation on another route (aren't these birds servicing Scandanavia or Singapore or something like that now?) Doesn't seem like a simple equation since maybe the A346s are sitting around idling but the A345s sure aren't.

Yes they have, I think, 5 direct flights a week to Norway but these could be service by the 747s. If they can sell the A340s then I think you can forget about the direct flights for the near future!

If they sell them, you'll see a post directed solely at my bitching about another connection on our upcoming flight

Kidding--but, in this market, I think Thai Airway would have a better shot at single-handedly resolving the Red Shirt/Yellow Shirt crisis than selling those planes.

BTW, are we going to see you in Bali in May??

I will be there if I can! I love Ubud and would like to meet you guys but the GTG is quite far in the future. I will not be able to confirm the trip until a month or two before the actual date.

Don't start about the red/yellow shirt thing. The reds are coming out this weekend and the yellows will counter. The reds are "recruiting" the foreign workers in Thailand to join their protest and this is making a lot of people mad. Good time to make shirts and I only have to make them in two colors!
