Tentative 14 Day Japan Itinerary July/August 2013

My husband , 2 daughters and I are planning a trip to Japan July 24-August 7. My eldest daughter, 18, has taken 5 years of high school Japanese. (My other daughter is 16 and is learning Mandarin.) We all visited Tokyo for 3 days in 2006, and our eldest daughter visited Tokyo & Kyoto for 11 days in 2008 with her school.

Our tentative plan is as follows:

July 24: Arrive Fukuoka, 6 pm

July 25: Fukuoka. Staying at Grand Hyatt Fukuoka.

July 26: Travel to Hiroshima. Visit Peace Park. Continue to Miyajima. Staying at ryokan Momiji-so

July 27: Miyajima

July 28 – August 3: Kyoto, staying at Hotel Kanro Kyoto, possible side trips include Nara, Osaka, and ???

August 3 – August 7: Tokyo, with side trip to Nikko. Staying at Cerulean Tower Tokyu. Depart Narita 4 pm.

We plan on getting 14 day JR rail passes. Aside from our air travel which is fixed, we are still flexible on places and dates. We generally love anything historical, great food, the outdoors, and immersing ourselves in the culture of wherever we are. Please give us your feedback on cities/side trips/hotels as it is greatly appreciated!

I loved Momiji-so! And I thought it a perfect place for decompressing after the emotional impact of Hiroshima,

> July 28 – August 3: Kyoto,... possible side trips include Nara, Osaka, and ???

Don't underestimate the time it will take to visit the area! I spent 4 days in Kyoto and 2 days in Nara and didn't see everything I'd have liked to see in the area. Another side trip you might consider is Ohara.

(And if you haven't already found it, see japan-guide.com for all sorts of other info.)

> Tokyo, with side trip to Nikko

You might consider an overnight in Nikko, particularly if you have any interest in seeing Kegon-no-taki and Lake Chuzenji.

Enjoy!

You can try mentai in Fukuoka. Okonomiyaki in Hiroshima and then compare it to Osaka style.

Something historical: the current Osaka Castle is a reconstruction, a good museum now. It has an interesting, dramatic, story.

Since you are a family of 4 looking for culture you may want to see if you can rent a machiya in Kyoto. These people have been very helpful to me in renting a machiya we will stay in this fall at a very reasonable price.

An overnight in Nikko would do it more justice and you may want more days there to escape the summers sweltering heat in Tokyo and Kyoto. Nikko is full of history and the summer escape for
Tokugawa Ieyasu(the samurai the movie and book "Shogun" centers on)

Aloha!
