DH and I have 3 days by ourselves in Beijing next October before our tour starts. Not sure of the hotel yet as we have not been notified by our tour company (Viking River Cruises) but i think it is the Shangri-La. Is it safe to take taxi's or is the metro the best way to get around. Are taxi's expensive and does one have to bargin the price on that as well? Are the metro stops posted in English as well as Chinese? Hate the thought of being lost in the metro. We have been many times by ourselves in Europe but this is my first trip to Asia - hence the River cruise with land tours included.
Cell phones - in Europe we just upgrade our phone service for when we are in Europe. is that the best thing to do for China - or are there other better ways to stay in communication? Any help is greatly appreciated....

Yes, taxis in Beijing are safe. Taxis have a meter and you need to check that the meter is started when you get into a taxi.

Taxis in Beijing are cheap and safe. Sometimes they tried not to use the meter. We just walked away and flagged down another one.
The subway is also very convenient with announcements and signage in English. I was very impresssed with the subway system in Beijing.
