Taxis in Thailand
Hi guys -- I'm debating whether to have taxis pick me up from the airport in Bangkok, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai. The hotels charge a pretty hefty fee for pick-up -- for example, it's $75 for a car from the airport to the Peninsula. Just want to see if it'll be a pain to get a taxi and also, if $75 seems really high.
Thanks!

$75 is really high. You can easily take a taxi. make sure they use the meter. The other option is to take a "limo" (this really means a larger sedan, not a limo as we think of it in the US). Since we always have lots of luggage - two suitcases are empty, to be filled with our purchases - we use one of the limo services in Bangkok. Ther is a limo desk as you exit customs. Some people prefer to have a limo waiting for them. If this is your preference, you can email AAC limo. Bob (rhkkmk) always uses them. If you do a search here for AAC Limo you'll find the email address. Take taxis in CM and Koh Samui. They are cheap and reliable.

We have used AAC Limo several times in BKK and been very happy. It's great to get off a long flight and have someone waiting for you. It's about 900-1000 Baht ($30 or so). If you decide to use a taxi, you can save some money, but it will be a Toyota corolla without much trunk space.

$75.00 is beyond ridiculous. You can take a taxi into central Bangkok for about 300 baht...to the Pen I would guess about 500 baht depending on the time of the day. Even if you get stuck in traffic, it'll be nowhere near $75.00. I took a taxi from my apartment building...next to Prom Phong skytrain station...Emporium Mall area...to the airport and it was about 300 baht...this was in January 2007. I took the limo service to my apartment from the airport since I had a knee injury and was too tired to walk to the taxi area. The limo desk was right there as I exited customs. They wanted 1200 baht, but I told them I could get a taxi for 300 baht, so they settled for 900 baht...no advance reservation or anything. Happy Travels!

$75 for a car from the airport to the Peninsula??? waaaah!!! For that price you can get a standard taxi (with change back) all the way to the Cambodian border at Aranyaprathet, 200++ KMs. For that price l hope its a Rolls Royce like the Pen in HK.

We "did" the Rolls pick-up service for the Pen once. It was reeeeaaaally nice (but the price is steep). If you want that luxury, go for it. How many chances do you have in your lifetime to arrive at your hotel in a "chaufeur (sp) driven" Rolls Royce for less than an arm and a leg.
Oh, we also did the "ordinary" Mercedes delivery to the airport. That was also very nice.
