Taking Alcohol to the Maldives

Jump to last reply

I learned (the hard way) that you cannot take alcohol to the Maldives anymore. In the past they would not allow you to take it into the country, but instead they would hold it for you and let you take it with you when you left.

So we bought wine from duty free in Dubai (like we have in the past) and planned on leaving it with customs and taking it with us to Sri Lanka. Nope! They took it all and said they would not be returning it! Apparently its a new law (as of this past May).

One other thing, the duty free shopping (on departure) is not good, but the duty free (on arrival) in Colombo is much better.

Hope this helps other travelers.
