tailor - singapore, viet nam, cambodia

Hello. My son is interested in having a couple of suits tailored while on vacation. Does anyone know of good, reputable tailors in these locations? Also, what should he ask for, look for, expect to pay, etc.? Thanks!

The best tailoring will be in Singapore. I would recommend Leighton's which is located in the Far East Shopping center (or the Far East Plaza - they are about a block apart). My ex has had suits tailored there for years. Your son should bring pictures of what he wants, and should expect to specify everything about the suit - every little detail. The price will depend mostly on the fabric he selects. The price will be about the same as a good quality off the rack suit in the US. He should expect at least three fittings. He should be very specific at the fitting about what looks/feels right and anything that doesn't.

Hoi An would be cheaper than Singapore, but the quality won't be nearly as good.

For shirts in Singapore, check out CYC. Believe there's a shop at the Raffles Hotel.

I wish I could tell you where he will be in each country, but as a young man he just flies by the seat of his pants when he travels! I know he wants quality in a suit and has been looking at pictures to get ideas (thanks Kathie!). I will pass this information on to him. Do you have any idea how long it takes to make a suit; any idea on the cost? I think he'll be in Singapore the longest and will be traveling through Viet Nam by train (along the coast, I think). Thanks for the information you have provided.

He should allow at least 4-5 days for a suit, a week if possible. Sorry, I can't give much of a sense of costs, as they vary depending upon fabric, and the dollar has fallen substantially since I last dealt with a tailor in Singapore. When he goes to talk with a tailor, the tailor will give him prices for suits in various fabrics.
