Sun Moon Lake - Worth a visit?

Has anyone been to Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan? Searches barely turn up any information here, and I'm wondering if it is worth the time to visit while I'm in Taiwan next month.

It is some years since I was there but Sun Moon Lake is one of the main things I remember about Taiwan. A nice relaxed place I think you will enjoy.

My family and I were in Sun Moon Lake years and years ago ~40 years !! I just remember taking a train from Taipei and then a car up thru beautiful gorges and extremely winding roads - don't remember much but do remember having a lot of fun there.

Like others, it has been years - only about 20 for me - since I went to Sun Moon Lake. Back then it was a nice area, and the two attractions are the Hsuan Tsang Monastery and the Wenwu Temple, on opposite sides of the lake.

I believe the Hsuan Tsang (= Xuan Zang if you spell it the mainland way) Monastery has some relics of this famous monk who travelled to India in the 6th century to get Buddist scripture to China and make better translation of the text.

Also the very tall Tzu En pagoda that you can climb for a nice view of the area.

Don't know how the area looks right now, but it was a highlight of all Taiwan tours back in the 70's and 80's.

If you can afford even one night at Lalu, it is unforgettable, but either way SunMoonLake is lovely!

I was there last winter and it was beautiful. Very nice, easy trail leading up to a small waterfall. There are also several restaurant/hotel/spas nearby. Make sure you experience the hot springs outside.

Taiwan is such a beautiful country, make sure you see more of it than just Taipei.
