James..relax. It may not be an inconvenience having stray dogs sauntering about as they do in Thailand...but as Ive discovered many times walking about in towns..you come across someone or group of people screaming at a dog and throwing things at it. You then wonder if the dog will attack...and like, where are you going to go? Try running on a thai sidewalk? Run into thai traffic?

James, that was an unserius approach on a serius matter. I am fond of all kind of animals, and I hate to see them suffer. And a lot of stray dogs do. I don't see why I should travel the world half around, just to let the suffering of this poor beasts being exposed up in my face.

I know..I know...trouble is in another resort a load of dogs actually were 'killed' because some foreign hotel guests were compalining about them, now that IS bad!
I know it looks like lots of them are suffering, but the alternative is like the 'West' where either dogs are kept as pets OR they are destroyed, that is sad.
We have a strange concept where we protect wild creatures and considor it bad to harm or kill them, but because Dogs have throughout history been able to 'live' with humans we somehow feel that they 'must' live with us too.
In Thailand, as you know, a Buddhist country, the concept is different. If animals are not causing any problem then they are left to live free. Also not all the dogs you see roaming around are what you would called 'stray dogs', many adopt people and live around houses/shops, they get food, and are considored as I guess almost a pet, but not on a leash as they might be elsewhere. They are free to come and go as they please.
As far as destoying them simply because they are taking up someone's beach space though I do not hold with a second! They may look thin and many are damaged but that does not mean they should be destroyed.
I do think it a bit dumb when people go up to dogs they do not know and start touching or fooling with them, that is crazy anywhere. But as far as them being an inconveniene, afraid it is part and parcel of Thailand and other countries. They wander freely in towns and villages and beaches where there are no forign tourists so I am afraid they have 'right' on their side.

The dogs are all registered. If you look they all hve a collar and a number so they are not complete strays.
When I was last on Koh Samui dog 72 was becoming troublesome and annoying tourists as well as the local Thais.
One night we heard a gun shot and we never saw dog 72 again. So I think the answer is yes. There are still stray dogs on Koh Samui but they shoot them if they becom a pain.
