Hi My husband and I are travelling with our 4 year old to Sri lanka in mid October for 11 nights.
Does anyone know how the increased fighting is affecting places such as Kandy/Nuwara Eliya/Beaches??
Any accommodation recommendations please? (mid$-range or otherwise REALLY REALLY good). Thanks.

Lot of accomodation options, suggest you to contact a good travel agent in Sri Lanka.
We loved Sri Lanka! We were staying in higher range accommodations, so I don't know if any of the places we stayed would meet your budget. Tourism in Sri Lanka has been negatively affected by the problems there, so you might be able to get some real deals. Check on whether you can get the Kandalama for a good price, and check on the Kandy House as well. We loved both, though they are very different from each other.

Kathie I had considered Kandy House but apparently they dont take kids. So am looking for a nice Kandy alternative.
Kandalama sounds great. I will give them a call and see about prices.
We are most likely going to stay Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Galle and one of the other beaches then back.
It was great to hear what prices you expect for gems, as I hope to buy some while we are there.
I would also love to buy spices (specially vanilla) but we are moving back to oz from singapore in a couple of months and I dont think we can bring them with us. Cheers
