SOMETHING OFF THE BEATEN TRACK IN OSAKA

Having done/seen the "usual" touristy spots in Osaka in our previous 4 visits, does anyone have a recommendation for something/someplace off the beaten track in Osaka? Thanks!

Great restaurant- vietnamese style- Ahn

Have you done Spa world? It is a lot of fun in a non-traditional take on a traditional activity...

Bekaboo,

Just curious, what keeps bringing you back to Osaka?

Some on this board bemoan Osaka so when I see someone who has been there four times, I'm thinking there must be a good reason. I have only traveled thru Osaka but have never stopped but would love to one day.

Aloha!

We love that Osaka is convenient to Kobe or Kyoto (will visit Nara on this trip), LOVE Dotonbori & Shinsaibashi, love all the lights at night, love the cute little cozy bars, and love that Rikuro cheesecake that you can get near Namba station

I have taken many people to Dokuyasuji and everyone has loved it. It is near Namba station and kind of hard but it is fun.

Does a day trip to Osaka from Tokyo make sense? I'll be in Tokyo for a few days in August and am considering it via Shinkansen. Thanks.

With almost 6 hours of commute time to and from Tokyo a day trip to Osaka does not make sense to me. Unless of course there is something or someone you must see in Osaka.

Hakone, Kamakura or Nikko would be better choices for a day trip from Tokyo.

Aloha!

citywalks- Hwntraveler is right. If you're going to do a day trip, choose someplace closer or where you have specific interests or friends. I could see doing the long commute if you felt a visit to japan wouldn't be complete without seeing someplace you really had an interest in, say, the Golden Pavillion in Kyoto.

Otherwise, you can find plenty to do in Tokyo or nearby. Especially in the heat of August!

Thanks Hwntraveler and Icuy. I will check out the above suggestions for day trips from Tokyo. One thing I do want to do is go to Chinatown in Yokohama for dinner one night. Any recommendations there? I'm prepared for hot and humid weather having been in Japan in summer. Thanks/arigato.

Bekaboo, when you say you've done most of the usual tourist sights in Osaka, I was wondering what kind of recommendations to make. Most of the responses have been in the shopping/dining line. Here's a list of the "top ten" Osaka sights. Have you seen them all?
