Fantastic photos! China is one of my big ambitions for 2008! I especially like the photo of Black Dragon Pool.

Hi,Your pictures are just beautiful. You have a good eye. What type of camera and lens do you have? I am thinking about getting a new digital camera and the clearity and colors are great on yours so I would like to check it out. Thanks!!!

Thanks everyone! I was using a Canon 20D and mainly two lenses, the 17-40mm f4.0 and 70-200mm f4.0. Maybe also the 50mm f1.4. Yes, it was a lot to lug around China. Including the tripod!!!

Don't you just love them "L" lenses!

Hanuman, great photos! I notice we were in the same place at the same time, Lijiang, Shuhe, Shangri La. In fact I looked closely at your pics to see if I can find myself in the background

Great photos. Very artistic and professional. Were the people okay about being photographed? No one annoyed or angry?
We're going to China (Beijing, Shanghai, etc.) in late March 2008 and am excited about seeing such grand sights. Thanks for sharing with us.

Great question TG, I haven't done too much street photography in the past and this was a great learning experience. Whenever I was visible to a potential subject, I'd "ask" them if I could photograph them, by pointing to my camera and then gesturing to them with a questioning expression. Plenty of people told me no, which I can totally respect (since I hate having my own picture taken!) and in those cases I'd put down my camera. There were also plenty of people who said yes - I found a fair number of parents to be okay with having their small kids photographed - and some older men even approached me wanting me to take their picture. I'm not much into the posed portrait type of image (which for some photographers is a true art form) but I enjoyed the interaction, and the people always got a kick out of seeing the digital image played back. Only in one case did I see a tourist paying a local woman to take her picture, a practice that I hope doesn't catch on. I should note that most of my "no" responses were from off the beaten path. The people who sell things to tourists (street markets, craftspersons, etc) were more likely to oblige as subjects. Oh, one other thing, the only person in authority that I photographed was the guard standing before Mao's portrait. Tons of tourists were taking the same shot at the same time. Otherwise I put away my camera near any policemen on the street, transit stations, etc.
