Six weeks in Mongolia Early Planning

In summer of 2016 I plan to spend August and half of September in Mongolia. Normally my trips are a month long but due to Mongolia's size and the options available I'm extending the trip in the hopes of being able to work in my adventures. Looking for input from like minded travelers who have done similar things, who can make strong recommendations for operators.

About me: I'm a 62 yo solo adventure traveler, journalist, author and athlete. Riding (horses) is probably my favorite, atlhough I climb, hike, kayak, skydive, paraglide, cycle and do just about everything else all over the world. I've also ridden camels which is a much beloved activity.

I"m writing a series of books about my favorite travel stories. Typically funny, often poignant, much involving engaging new cultures and being humbled by what we don't know (which is pretty much everything).

Why Mongoliar: it's huge, wild, distant, remote, has horses, lots of remote tribes, hard to get to places, places where you can go by horseback and camel only, where you can ride reindeer, and be as far from a hotel as possible. Five star hotels give me chiggers. I'll take the ground any day.

What's on the menu: currently I've signed up with Equus adventures for August 1-15 to go to the Siberian border to see the reindeer tribes. That is dependent upon our getting at least one more person on board.

Second: The Altais. Open to good recommendations;

Third: Riding camels in the desert. Open to recommendations.

Spending no time in the city. Not of real interest this trip. Those of you who have used good trekkig companies that you can recommend for good treatment of their animals, for a good expenrience in the wild, a nice balance of hard work, play and photo ops, please kindly, I would so treasure your recommendations.

Not looking for the extreme or near high end kind like Nat Geo. They may be nice but they are hugely overrpriced. LIke most of us I'm on a budget especially since this has to stretch for six weeks. Thanks in advance for the commnity's wisdom as it gathers over the months. All referrals researched and taken seriously. I like to use local where possible.

Happy travels, all.

Even though my interest in Mongolia is different from yours (the Buddhist monasteries). I'll be interested in what you turn up. And of course, I'll be interested in your trip report! Good luck!

thanks Kathie. Plans are changing- probably not going to stay as long now, but still doing Altai.

Lots of choices out there, biggest challenge is finding those who like to go off the beaten path. Happily there are several, and that works for me!
