Lucky Plaza, Funan Center, Sim Lim Square. Bargain! Bargain! Bargain.

Also regular electronic marts like Best Denki, Safe, Courts sells at fixed prices. Check newspaper for sales.

Hi George,

For photographic equipment you can't go wrong with Peninsular Plaza (North Bridge Road). Most of the Sole distributers are located here so the prices you get (albeit with a little haggling) are fair. This goes for digital as well as non-digital photographic equipment.

You can also get online quotes before you come from some of the outlets. Do try to avoid Lucky Plaza or basically any outlet in the Orchard Road area. There have been countless cases of bad service and exhorbitant price traps.

Funan (very near Peninsular Plaza) and Sim Lim Square (Jalan Besar area) are okay for computer goods. A good site for current prices on computer parts is http://www.hardwarezone.com

The above site was started by student locals during their studies and have grown very big. It is extremely popular for people to guage current trends and price hikes.

I'd like to buy a digital camera when we stop in Singapore but it will be on a Sunday. Will the shops (Peninsular Plaza) be open please? Thanks.

Odile, if you will be there on Sunday Feb 2 (second day of Chinese New Year) the shops will NOT be open. Any other Sunday in the year is generally OK.

George, if you are from the US, you will not find any better prices for electronics. You are much better off buying in the US. If you really feel compelled to buy in Singapore, do a lot of comparison shopping before you go, and know what prices are. Then bargain as hard as you you can, knowing what the item would cost you in the US, and what you want to save. There is no sales tax in Singapore, so you would at least save that. Good luck.
