Singapore accommodation with kids

Jump to last reply

Hi. We are stopping over in Singapore on our way to and back from Europe for 2 or 3 days each way. (We are travelling from Australia). We are considering staying on Sentosa Island on the way home. Has anyone experienced any accommodation there? Any recommendations? We definitely want a nice pool area. Thanks.

If you are only going to be in S’pore for 2 days, I am not sure I would recommend Sentosa, unless your plan is just to stay on Sentosa and hang around the pool/beach and go to the amusement park for the entire trip. If you want to see other parts of Singapore, and only have 2 days, IMO, Sentosa is too isolated. It’s probably 45 minutes to the zoo by taxi, versus 20 minutes from the Orchard Road area, and by public transport, even longer. (The direct shuttle buses to the zoo do not service Sentosa, just the Orchard Road and downtown areas.) This is all relative of course, because the island is small, but you are adding a fair bit of time, cost and inconvenience by staying on Sentosa if your plan is to sightsee in other parts of town. Sentosa is not near an MTR station and not walkable to anything, so you will end up taking taxis quite a bit. There is a dedicated bus which goes on a route to and from Sentosa and either the Orchard Road area or the Raffles area, but I think this may end up to be sort of a pain to use. Even a 3-day stay might be a lot of back and forth, but at least for 1 day you co could just stay on Sentosa. The taxi ride to the Orchard Road and downtown areas are probably 15-20 minutes, so it's not that it's far in terms of distance, but doing this back and forth a few times a day could get tiring not to mention costly.

You may not find as many good hotel choices on Sentosa, see tripadvisor.com to get an idea of quality. The Capella is nice, but quite expensive and I am not sure it is a place for kids. The Shangri-La would be a good choice, but is undergoing a complete renovation and I am not sure when your trip is and whether it will be open by then. But check the website, if it is open it would be the best choice for the island, IMO. Other than that, IMO in terms of quality you can do better in town I think. The Sentosa Resort may also work, but I think it may be getting old at this point too.

Without a budget it is hard to advise. I think the Fairmont has a very nice, large pool area. The Marriott’s pool area is good too. The Shangri-La in the Orchard Road area has a good pool area in garden greenery (hard to find in S’pore), but again without knowing your price point it’s hard to be more specific.

If you really have no desire to see Singapore, a hotel you might consider is Nikoi. It’s offshore by quite a bit, so not a choice for sightseeing in Singapore, and perhaps coming off a long flight the journey is too much, but for a beach vacation for 2-3 days it may work. See http://www.nikoi.com/index_home.html. I am not that crazy about Bintan Island itself, but that is another idea if you want a pure pool/beach vacation and don’t want to see Singapore.

My choice for kids in Singapore would be the Shangri-La off Orchard Road. (I agree with Cicerone that you're better off being centrally located, than on Sentosa.)

The Shangri-la has a big pool and lots of open green space for kids to run around in. Several restaurants.

It's a bit of a hike to the MTR but taxis are plentiful and reasonable.

I like the Garden Wing (but only with pool view) but the Tower would probably be the most economical.
