SHOULD I GO TO THAILAND THIS SUMMER?

Hi there,
My boyfriend and I were going to go travelling at the end of August of this year. We were hoping to start in Thailand but now with all the political unrest, I'm unsure of what to do. If anyone has any insight into the whole situation there, it would be greatly appreciated !!

Jackie

August is often the wettest month in Thailand. Protests r no big deal outside Bangkok.

Take a look here for historical weather info: www.weatherbase.com

Personally, I'm not concerned about the unrest for myself, but I've been traveling to Thailand for 30 years or so. If I was new to Thailand and SE Asia, I'd keep an eye on developments there and make I choice I was comfortable with.

Warm greetings Jackie (and the fine name of Jackie presently figures in my rather extended family, Scotland to Singapore; well done),

As for your Thailand travelling concerns, have always had - to date - most acceptable stays in beloved Bangkok and a sweet slice of holiday serenity on Phuket (Amanpuri). Mind you, the majority of my Bangkok stays have been work related; of late, consisting of 1-3 nights (usually Four Seasons or St. Regis on corporate packages), and office buildings and airport. Will say, the past ~ seven months of BKK business travel have had some interesting (street related) moments, but nothing that interfered with scheduled meetings. (And partially for that, will give ongoing praise to a lovely and long-time friend who works at the Four Seasons; rather well-connected Thai woman.) Am presently scheduled to return to Bangkok for meetings in ~ fortnight and no present concerns. (We were in Bangkok during the initial hours of the '06 'coup'; must say, delightfully quiet that first morning, down by the Chao Phraya river.)

(And for you and other esteemed Fodorites, quite the summer lodging bargains to be had in BKK. In particular, have recently received targeted emails from a few of the properties noted on my review of the St. Regis.)

Savour your planning, Jackie; very happy for you. Should future travels involve our fine home of Singapore, honoured to assist. Early Friday and weekend wishes - and flights - to you and all,

macintosh (robert)

Hey Jaclyn,
I think u must go in April, it’s the month of "Songkran" festivals where Thai citizens celebrate their new year by enthusiastically dousing each other (and tourists) with cold water. There is nothing like this anywhere else in the world as it attracts large numbers of tourists, you can expect big crowds but with a bit of an increased prices.

In CM now. Truly peace and tranquility on the streets, in the pubs, and on the temple steps. Oh, yeah. The POLICE and ARMY are also there. It's great here now. Weather fine, not humid but cool at 5 am and quiet then. Super for meditation and yoga. I find CM a very accommodating city welcoming all sorts of folks without much hassle.
