We will be spending 7 days in Sri Lanka, visiting my brother in law in Colombo. We'll definitely spend a couple days in Colombo, but we were thinking about a 3 day trip to somewhere else on the island. We're most interested in monuments, historical/cultural attractions. We've seen many, many tea plantations and done wildlife safaris in other countries, so we're not inclined that way. Any suggestions? Especially for places that might be a bit more off the beaten track? Also, any worthwhile day trips from Colombo?

Why not go to the cultural triangle area for your 3 day trip? If you base yourself in Dambulla (Kandalama if it's in the budget), you can see the Dambulla cave temples, Polonnarwua and Sigiriya - all amazing places. Take a look at our photos www.marlandc.com/SriLanka

Ditto what Kathie said. Don't forget Kandy is also close to the cultural triangle. Galle is a popular destination.
Habarana should be agood place to base yourself for 3 days, good selection hotels, lots of good historical sights in the vicinity, also Kandy is only 2 hours away.
