shangrila has long been our favorite hotel in singapore. it's not the newest or the fanciest but has been recently renovated and is in a lovely garden setting. it's about a 15 minute walk to the orchard road shopping area which some don't like, but i consider it a plus. although a lot of people recommend the valley wing, we always go for the garden wing so that we can get a balcony. just be sure to get a room overlooking the pool.
there are many, many excellent restaurants in singapore. for casual, local we like newton circus food courts. for chinese and other asian (which are wonderful), i have to defer to someone more experienced than i. for western/fusion try the following:
grill on devonshire
paladino di firenze
raffles steakhouse
shrooms at chijmes
efferus
Shangri-La is an oasis paradise! You'll love it. Don't go to their Blu r'rant tho. The food sucks. For goood food these are my favourite:
Italian: Da Paolo e Judie, Neil Road.
Paladino used to be my fav but the food std has dropped. It is now located at the S'pore Art musuem at Bras Basah Rd.
French: Au Jardin les Amis at the Botanic Gardens. This is the best and most romantic r'rant in S'pore. US$100 per person w/o wine.
French-Creole: La Fete de Cuisiner, Waterloo St.
Japanese: Shiro at Greenwood Ave. This is S'pore's Tetsuya or Nobu.
Indian: Rang Mahal, Pan Pacific Hotel.
Chinese: Chiang Nan Chun at Four Seasons Hotel, Boulevard Rd.
Go to Club Street for good r'rnts. And don't forget to try the low-end hawker food.
Singapore is full of great places to eat! I agree with Wayne about Au Jardin les Amis at the Botanical Gardens, it's a lovely, unforgettable restuarant in a beautiful setting. My advice is to go for lunch, that will allow you to see the lovely gardens and the prices are a bit lower at lunch.
Another special lunch - Compass Rose atop the Westin Stamford has a dynamite seafood buffet as well as an incredible view of three countries.
I always enjoy walking the Quay in the evening and choosing a place that catches my fancy. I've eaten at a number of places along the Quay and have never chosen badly!
