Seeing Delhi by METRO

Just thought I would start a thread on the Delhi Metro, it's a great way to see Delhi and is very cheap as well. To any of you spending time in Delhi I would recommend that you use the METRO as an inexpensive and great way to get around the city.

I found this post on Indiamike which is another great site that was recommended to me by a few of you on Fodors all credit for this post goes to UDITNHE from Indiamike.

Delhi Sightseeing………how to see Delhi by the Metro

Thank you, JillianV, for posting information about the Delhi Metro. I printed out the "How to see Delhi by Metro" notes, which came in very handy during my trip there last week.

Everyone: the Delhi Metro is fast, clean, and very easy to use. If your destination is close to a metro station, it is much faster than a taxi.

At each station, there is a map in both English and Hindi, showing the fares to all stations from that point. You buy a token from an attendant (no machines), but the lines move fast; I never waited more than a couple of minutes. Fares are about RS 20.

All stations are well marked with English language name signs, and within the trains, announcements are made of the next station (both electronically and by loudspeaker; in both English and Hindi). Transfers between lines are well marked, and are free.

Women traveling alone can use the women-only train car, which is the first car of each train. Many women do; others ride in the mixed cars.

I was usually the only Westerner in the train car, but had no issues.

A final note on how to ride: to enter the system, you scratch the token against a pad on the turnstile which opens the turnstile. Upon leaving, you insert the token in a turnstile exit slot; as long as the fare is sufficient, the turnstile opens. If the fare is not sufficient, the turnstile does not open and you are directed to an adjustment office.

We did use the metro on several occasions and it is easy to use, however, if your time is limited and you are in Delhi over a weekend when traffic is considerably lighter, then a car and driver are very convenient.
