Any suggestions on what part/neighborhood of Bangkok to stay in? I would like affordable (no more than US$50/night), convenient (close to public transport as I understand Bangkok traffic can be bad), and with some sort of character (but given my other demands this may not be possible). Seems like the riverside ones are pricey, and the ones in the historic areas are not very close to public transport.
Suggestions? Thanks!

Seriously, you might take a look at Astera Sathorn. It's nothng fancy, but it's quite close to Saphan Taksin BTS and the Chao Phraya express boat pier. The BTS will get you downtown, while the express boat will get you to the riverside sights.

Warm greetings and, well, will gently suggest a character soaked 'Suite Seven', at, yes, the lovable La Residence hotel, from, well, the early mists of time, 5+ years back -- current tariffs and 'your mileage' may vary. (Vaguely recall a 'teddy bear' to hang outside 'suite' to gently convey tender times with loved one.)
Am certain many others will chime in with heartfelt thoughts, so, until then, this BKK business traveller thanks you for considering parting with funds in beloved Thailand, check out other good suggestions on 'sqtalk' -- and, as of ~ four days back, SQ and Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit continue to provide most satisfactory work treatment. (And, looking forward to sixth 'anniversary' Loy Kratong, 'riverside' -- drinks on us, all 17 of you family friendly fodorites.)

Check out the Honey Hotel, Soi 19, Sukhumvit Road. All the character you can handle at a cheap price. Close to the Skytrain and assorted bars, restaurants, and massage shops.
take a look at the many serviced apartments....centre point silom is right next to the skytrain....omni on soi 4 sukhumvit is very reasonable...marriott courtyard... rembrandt hotel... many hotels with the name president....soi 11 hotel....davis hotel...
The Sukhumvit area of Bangkok has a wide variety of choices, from expensive hotels to cheap hotels, expensive apartments to cheaper apartments. I always stay at the Adelphi Suites on sui 8. It is a 2 minute walk to the skytrain. The neighborhood has character.
There are lots of options along soi 11... the Suk 11 Hotel (more like a place for the hippies of yesteryear), the Grand Business Inn, @8 hotel (but some rooms do not have windows.. ugh)... but the location is at the base of the escalator to the skytrain at Nana! I doubt that there is a close place to a skytrain!
I personally would not pick Omni on soi 4. My son always stays there, but he has friends in that building and in neighboring businesses. It's quite a long walk to the skytrain IMO. The neighborhood is pretty much all bars/pool table bars/beer places... depends on if you want that sort of neighborhood. Maybe you do?
If you are travelling with family, do not stay on soi 4. Just my opinion.
