Scenery around Luang Prabang
Here is what I want to know: Could we see some of that great scenery south of LP if we hired a driver in LP and asked to be driven maybe 1.5 hours south? Or, is the best scenery even further south than that? I should add in that we are booked into Nong Kiau north of LPP for three nights (this is as many nights as I could find to book at a semi-decent place to stay in NK), so if that area has equivalent or even better scenery we 'd be fine and wouldn't go south in search of scenery.
We'd thought we'd do the typical Vientiane/Vang Vieng/Luang Prabang route by road mainly so we could see the scenery between VV and LP. We are running into problems with finding semi-decent lodging in VV since all of the semi-okay (to us) places are fully booked. We didn't realize how much Chinese New Year would impact bookings for people who want to book only 4 to 5 days ahead.
Plus, the busses between these destinations aren't sounding all that great. Although I haven't personally gotten any price quotes, I assume a private driver for the trip from Vientiane to LP would be quite pricey. So, I think we've decided to just skip the entire idea and fly from Vientiane to LP.

I'm afraid I can't answer your question precisely as I didn't travel by road, went by boat down to LP (2 trips, different boats each time), then flight to Vientiane. However, if case you don't know, there's a beautiful waterfall not too far down river from LP, described here:

We took a boat to the riverside village closest to the falls, walked through the village to the road, waited there for a ride in the back of a pick-up to go the rest of the way. It was a fun day.

There are actually two sets of waterfalls outside of Luang Prabang:

All of the area around Luang Prabang is beautiful. We visited both sets of waterfalls, the Pak Ou caves, weaving villages and a Hmong village celebrating the Hmong New Year. Sorry, I don't know what directions we were driven from Luang Prabang. But I think you can't go wrong.

If you go to Kuang Si waterfall (beautiful), go in the morning. It gets very crowded later. Very few people were there at 9:30, getting crowded 2 hours later, and we heard that in the afternoon you could hardly see the water through the visitors. You can also go by tuk tuk or minivan, takes an hour or less from LP.
In Nong Khiaw now, which is gorgeous. My husband is feeling sick, so we may see less of the area than we hoped.

the country side around both Vang Vieng and LP is really nice....but you don't need to drive an hour to find it.
I've recommended Hobo maps before - they show tracks and trails around both places...these can be accessed on bike/foot/off-road carts and various other means - I'd look into renting a mode of transport and exploring I use my 4WD but most of these tracks are easily accessible by more mundane vehicles. You will also find some detail on Google maps.
