Sapporo to Lake Akan

Is it worth trying to do a day trip from Sapporo to Lake Akan, or is the travel time not worth the time there?

There are many great sights east of Sapporo, but I would not rate Akan-ko high among them. That said, the green algae balls (Marimo) in the museum are worth a look. Masshu-ko is much more scenic (like Crater Lake) and Kussharo-ko is pretty good. And Daisetsuzan (and the area south of there), and the Shiretoko Peninsular are spectacular.

Someotherguy:

Thanks for your input. I don't know why I'm so focused on Lake Akan. Perhaps it is not worth the trouble.

We will only be in Sapporo for five days. We were there for only one day last Fall while on a cruise stop. We did do a little city tour, but spent most of our time at the Autumn food festival. We also stopped at Kushiro, Hakodate, Aomori, and only sailed around the Shiretoko Peninsula. This short trip gives us a chance to return to Hokkaido. It is a package that includes airfare and hotel, so our "home base" is already established. We plan to return to Otaru for half a day. Can you suggest other things we might see in the area?

Sapporo has rather slim pickings from a sightseeing perspective. Otaru is a fairly attractive place a short train ride away but I found a single day was enough for both places. If you are there for several days, I'd be inclined to check out the cultural opportunities and other pleasures of just hanging out in Japan.

The Shikotsu-Toya National Park looks feasible and promising. I've not been there, but photos of its lakes look similar to Akan-ko: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6735.html . I expect there will be tours available, but otherwise you may need to rent a car (easy, but you do need an international permit). There are some ideas about Noboribetsu Onsen and the nearby Ainu village in your other thread.

It seems there's good transport to the park: check out leaflet 101 at this JNTO site.

The Hokkaido part starts on Oct 4 of this trip report.

Most trips are worthwhile to those who take the effort to travel...

Aloha!
