Can anyone recommend a ryokan (or hotel with Japanese style rooms) for the last night of our stay in Japan?

We have to be at Narita at about 9am the next day, so don't want to be too far from the Keisei skyliner station. We would prefer to stay in a ryokan and want something quite nice for our last night in Japan without paying a fortune as we won't be arriving until the evening.

Has anyone got any suggestions? I have only really looked at Ueno but is it worth staying in Nippori and getting the skyliner from there? Most of the places near Ueno station look a bit too basic and grim.

We stayed www.andon.co.jp/ in Ueno and found it very convenient. It may be a little basic for some with small rooms best described as modern minimalist, but it was inexpensive, had great staff and good breakfasts.

kimono-san, i assume you've already been in japan for a few days. so, why not spend your last day in narita, especially since you have a 9am flt.

i stayed at the tokyu excel twice, and its really a nice business hotel, with convenient hotel shuttle to narita town, and the shopping center, as well as to nrt.

It's been far too long since I stayed at the Suigetsu Hotel Ohgaisou to actually endorse it, but I mention it as an option that you might want to research. When I was there in 2006, it had both western-style and tatami-style rooms. It was close to the Keisei skyliner station at Ueno and also close to other transportation options for exploring Tokyo. When I was there, I noted some problems with my western-style room, but thought the location very good and the price far more affordable than most Tokyo lodging. As I recall, tatami rooms were much more expensive, if still surprisingly affordable for Tokyo.

Do note that there is an enormous difference between a ryokan and a Japanese-style tatami room. I'm no expert, but as I understand it, ryokans typically provide traditional Japanese luxury services at luxury prices. Rooms identified as having tatami mats may simply refer to the style of the room's furnishings.

Suigestsu Hotel Ohgaisou is one that keeps coming up in all of the searches and seems like a possibility. We will have done lots of top end ryokan on this trip, so we don't mind if this is a tatami room in a hotel rather than a "proper' ryokan - it just seems a shame to have a western style room for our last night in Japan.

We will be travelling back from Hiroshima the day before so won't get back to Tokyo until the evening so we probably wouldn't be back in time for the early mealtimes that ryokan set...making the hotel with a Japanese style room seem more appropriate.

If you have to be at Narita at 9:00 am then kuranosuke's tip above to stay in Narita town is a very good one and what I would do in your situation. Otakeya Ryokan comes recommended.

I stayed at Katsutaro. It was only 10 minutes walk from UENO Kaisei. Nothing special, but for one night it was ok and cheap. There was a small lobby with internet access and free coffe/tea which was nice.
A bit more further but nicer is Sawanoya Ryocan - a place with history. High recommended.
