Hello,
I am a first time visitor to Japan. I want to spend one or two nights in a traditional Japanese ryokan in Hakone. The travel agent at HIS Travel Agency suggested a few ryokans for me, but they all are either sold out OR very westernized. Is there any ryokan that anyone can recommend that is traditionally japanese, and they had staff there who spoke enough english to help you? I plan to do the pirate boat-owakudani-funicular excursion, as well as go in some nice hot springs baths.
Unfortunately I'm not ready to stay at a ryokan without any english available.
Thank you very much.
Robin

Trip Ideas
We just stayed in Hakone- Yumoto at Suimeisou Hotel. It is on the river about a one minute walk from the train. The building is nothing to look at from outside, and the lobby looks like your basic Japanese hotel. this is a place where the service and food rule.
Hawaiiantraveler found this for us, and we booked about 4 days before we arrived in early October. I found it to be a great value for our stay.

Our Japanese style room on the 4th floor was very large with a private bathroom, comfortable beds, nice sitting area overlooking the river, and fabulous dinner and breakfast served in the room. The men's and women's baths on the 6th floor had nice big onsen, and all the amenities from hair creams to foot massager. You are one short train ride to Odawara station, where you can catch the shinkansen or the Romance car back to Tokyo.
The staff speaks just enough English to make you comfortable. I've stayed in a high-end and cheap inns in Japan, and would rate this one a "hidden gem" for the location, food room size, and atmosphere. oh and the price ...only 14,700 yen per person on weekdays!
Not knowing your budget I'll put up a bunch here you can check out. The people at Japanese Guest houses are helpful and they do seem to get the better rooms in the ryokan assigned to their clients but you pay a little more for this service rather than booking directly with the ryokan. That said I have used JGH's on more than 15 separate bookings and been very pleased with them everytime.
