Ryokan - Tokyo or Kyoto?

Hello all,

My BF and I would like to stay in a ryokan one night. Would it be better (experience, price) to look for one in Tokyo or Kyoto?

We'd like to experience the whole thing including kaiseki dinner, but I'm not sure we can afford this. I've seen some that are around $300/person for the night. Our price range is probably more in the neighborhood of around half that amount.

Any specific recommendations?

Thanks!
Judy

Just realized that when I gave our budget ballpark, I was only thinking of the cost for lodging. With 2 meals, our range is probably somewhere closer to $200, give or take a few dollars.

I'd stay at a ryokan in Kyoto for sure. You won't find decent ryokans in Tokyo, not even in the suburbs. However, there are nice ryokans in the Hakone, Yuzawa onsen, and Nikko areas, which are 1-2 hours by train away from Tokyo. I once stayed at a ryokan in Hakone and thought I made a trip to heaven.

I'd stay at a ryokan in Kyoto for sure. Generally speaking, the really nice ones that'll be memorable will cost you 20,000-25,000 and up per person per night. That includes a fabulous kaiseki dinner and breakfast.

I recommend Kinmata, a really beautiful and traditional ryokan. I stayed there a few years ago. It was 25,000 with meals and 15,000 without, an option some places in Kyoto have, Prices may be more now. It was absolutely gorgeous.

When I went to Kyoto last year with my wife & MiL, we stayed at Yachiyo. It's just a few minutes' walk from Nanzenji, one of the big draws for us. I don't remember the price, but I'd want to say it was around your top-end (perhaps a bit more). Food was fabulous though. We had kaiseki the first night, and the 2nd night we were there MiL & I went for shabu shabu (they also offered sukiyaki) while vegetarian wife went for another kaiseki meal which was almost completely different from the night before...

THANK YOU! I had originally thought that Kyoto would be the better city to stay in a ryokan, but then couldn't remember why I thought this. I wondered if it mattered to open up Tokyo as an option, but I will still with a ryokan in Tokyo.

Thanks too for the recommendations. I will definitely look them up.

Oops, that should read that I will stick with a ryokan in Kyoto. That's what I get for trying to multitask.
