Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel - Bangkok

We are planning on a 5 night stay at the ROS in January; this will be our first visit to Bangkok. We will be using Starwood points and dollars. We checked with the hotel and were told that the Skytrain stop is not being dismantled. Many Fodorites had highly recommended this hotel. Do you still recommend the ROS? Is there a problem with the Skytrain station or any other transportation near there? Thank you very much.

It is unclear what is going to happen with the Skytrain station, but it is not eminently in danger of being closed. Even without the skytrain, you have good access to some of the premier sights of Bangkok via water taxi: The Grand Palace/Emerald Buddha, Wat Po, Wat Arun, etc. You can also walk to Chinatown and Wat Tramit. The ROS has one of the loveliest pool areas in Bangkok, set in a garden with both sunny and shady areas.

its a great location and you can't beat your price...

good intro to bkk

if you come out the front door, turn right and walk to the end of the road, turn left and in the next block on your right is an excellent restaurant--gallery cafe... they also have thai massages upstairs..

eassy taxi rides from there (have the doorman get you one) and a good mall next door

I have not been at the otel for 2 years but it ids very nice and there is other alternate transpertation options. If it is not rush hour, if there is such a thing in BK, then the Taxi's are even an option for $3-$4. If you want custom made men's suits suits, not women wear, just behind the hotel is a 2 story small building and on the second floor there is a tailor Monte Sato who does fine work. If you want a US valued Canali $2000 suit for $350-$375 made with 180 superfine 100% wool he does a good job. You need 3 fittings and with your location you are 100 yars away from from Jack's shop. He may even have Sherry & Holland fabric 150 150% superfine wool and a suit with that fabric would likely cost $475 but in the US it would be $4000+/-. If you use Jack it would be the 3 fittings over 4 days but only the first meeting takes 1 hour to select the fabric, lapel widths, etc. The second and third fittings are 20 minutes and the final might bde 45 minutes to 1 hour. Make sure he does not bond the lapels, hand stitches the lapels and the side pockets and lapel slit is finely done. Make sure he does not put his label in but just hand stiches your initials in block or script letters. If you buy 2 suits of any quality you can negotiate 15% off his quoted price. I bought 3 suits in 2 visits but I must admit I thought the suits were great but his dress shirts were only just o. Don't buy a $250 suit for you will not be happy. Too many shops offer them but the fabric will buckle after 4-6 dry cleanings.

Stan, Jack's shop is near what was the Marriott, now the Anantara, not the Royal Orchid.
