Royal Orchid Sheration vs. 4 Points Sheraton Bangkok
On our next trip to BKK we will be using SPG points. I would like to hear from folks that have stayed at both of these hotels. We are at the lowest SPG level so I assume we would get the older rooms at the Royal Orchid not the tower rooms. Please compare the following:
1) Rooms- size, decor (new or needs a major makeover), bathroom (modern, double sinks, separate shower, makeup mirror)
2) Breakfast buffet- offered and if so at what price and what is the selection?
3) Transport- hotel boat to the skytrain- how often? Hotel tuk tuk?
4) How close is the skytrain or subway?
5) Upgrade to the club floor- what would it cost? Is it worth it?
6) Based on your experience - the good, the bad, the ugly.
7) What sights/shopping venues are close by?

Bill, I can give you the info on the ROS. Since we always stay in the Towers, this info is accurate for the Towers portion.
They did a major renovation a couple of years ago, and I believe all the rooms (not just the Tower rooms) were updated. Bathrooms do not have double sinks, but do have separate showers and tub, make-up mirror.
Breakfast buffets in etc. offers pretty much everything - both western and Asian foods, omelet station, etc.
Hotel to skytrain via shuttle boat every 30 minutes.
We love staying on the Club floors (Towers). Breakfast (in the Club or in etc) is included, as is afternoon tea with small sandwiches and desserts, and evening cocktails with canapes and desserts. Some laundry is included (they keep changing this) as is internet access in the Lounge (either on your own laptop via wireless or on one of the lounge computers). I don't know what the cost would be for you to upgrade.
The good: being on the river is a huge benefit - the river traffic is endlessly fascinating.
The bad: I understand there are a few rooms on the lower floors that only have a partial river view.
The ugly: We had a run-in with a new Towers manager last trip that was ugly. Other than that, we have always had superb service.
As you are right next to a water taxi stop, it's a quick trip to some of the major wats (Wat Po, Wat Arun, Emerald Buddha), Grand Palace. We have walked to Chinatown and Wat Tramit, but you can also take the water taxi one stop. Walking distance to a number of good restaurants. Next door to River City Shopping center.

while 4 pts is new, it is considered a lesser rated hotel..
look at plaza anthanee as a better alternative for olive...also sheraton grande...more pts of course.
i think you would be happier at ROS
when are you going?

Four Points: right next to Skytrain and New Terminal 21 Mall, small pool and gym, okay breakfast but expensive, can be had for about 3000 points, rooms are small, but still in fairly new condition, has modern decor, no executive lounge, easy access to massage, street shopping, nightlife.

Kathie - what is the price at the ROS for the breakfast buffet?
Bob- no dates as yet - I'm just trying to see what hotel makes sense- I'm a value shopper so while I really love the Plaza- its just too many points- I'm looking long term and trying to stretch my points so that they last for as many trips as possible. The ROS seems like a good bargain- 3,000 points per night versus the Plaza and others at 7,000 points. But I'm concerned a bit about the ROS as I have seen reports that the non tower rooms need a makeover.

I have no doubt that ROS is a much more highly rated hotel. I've not stayed there. I'll be at Four Points in July, in a junior suite. I'm looking forward to trying the place. I've been in the lobby and it is nice and open and bright. ROS is very dark in the lobby IMO.
As you know, I like a location close to the BTS and shopping. I have not stayed on the river in a very long time. It's too far away from all of my friends and shopping places.

Ok I just checked with the ROS - all rooms renovated completed in 2009 so no worries there. Its no longer 3,000 points per night more like 3700 so the cash and points deal is better in my opinion- 1600 plus $30.
