Robot Restaurant in Kabukicho
Who has been to the Robot Restaurant in Kabukicho in Tokyo? I know it is touristy...but seems kinda fun especially for my 14 yr old son. Is it worth the admission or just so tacky I should skip it? It gets mixed reviews.

I've had houseguests here in Tokyo go and they've all enjoyed it, most recently a couple in their sixties who said they didn't get any of the cultural references but thought it fantastic for sheer spectacle alone. If you decide to go, you shouldn't have to pay full price. There are lots of discount vouchers floating around (typically 2,000 yen off per ticket) - they'll be in the free tourist mags and expat publications like Tokyo Weekender and Metropolis.

Your son will probably enjoy it. It is exceedingly tacky. They put a lot of time into selling drinks. First there is some extended time in the the lounge, with a band and singer, and drinks for sale. Then you go down to the um, arena - it is smaller than I imagined. Drinks for sale before each of the acts as well as some souvenirs. The first act was kind of fun, but short. The 2nd act should appeal to your son. I didn't stay for the 3rd act.
It is a wacky show. Overpriced, imo, so definitely get the discount - there is a discount online for some shows - the earliest one, IIRC.
It is a bit tricky to find the ticket office. There is a guy holding a sign in front of the entrance. The ticket office on the other side of the alley. If you don't see that guy or it is not busy where you think the entrance is then you are in the wrong place. You go to the ticket office to make reservations and then have to come back to buy your tix. That's how it worked for me, anyway.
One thing about it was that there were NO Japanese in the audience.

Go! I think your 14 year old will love it. It is kitschy and weird and exciting and fun! From the moment you begin to walk down the neon lit stairs you are on sensory overload. It is not a restaurant. Drinks and popcorn. So plan to eat before or after. I took kids, teens, parents and grandparents and we all had fun. Do it!

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I think we will try it...and wait to buy tickets when in Tokyo rather then beforehand. (i heard the food is bad so will take the advice and eat elsewhere

Yeah i think your son will love it. It's a cool experience but it is really pricey. They serve food but the food is terrible. But as long as you dont have any expectations for the food then i think you will really enjoy it lol.
