Okay - based on advice (thanks) I revised the itinerary for my mother-daughter trip in April (mom's 70th bday):

April 1 - arrive 4pm from Boston, sleep in Tokyo
April 2 - Tokyo all day tour
April 3 - soba noodle class, kitchenware district, food tour at night
April 4 - day trip to kamakura, sleep in Tokyo
April 5 - go to Takayama
April 6 - takayama (maybe we don't need 2 nights, but it's a long way so??)
April 7 - Tak to Kyoto
April 8 - Kyoto
April 9 - Kyoto (day trip somewhere??)
April 10 - Kyoto
April 11 - Kyoto
April 12 - go to Miyajima - how to get there??, Sleep in Miyajima
April 13 - go to Hakone, sleep in Hakone
April 14 - Hakone, hike, onsen, sleep there
April 15 - Hakone to tokyo during day for 6pm flight home

I cut out Koyasan, even though I really wanted to get there and sleep in a temple. Thoughts? Does order look good in terms of cutting down travel time? Any other thoughts? Again, looking for mix of city and pastoral, culture and fun, hands-on activities a plus. Mix of ryokan and hotel, etc. Thanks.
