We will be spending two days in Bangkok doing mostly touring. Does anyone have suggestions for restaurants near the Shangri la for a quick breakfast and dinner after touring. Would like to try to avoid the hotel if possible, but do need proximity.

For dinner, Harmonique, Tongue Thai and the Gallery are all reasonably close by - just a short taxi ride away.
As you will be right next to the skytrain, an endless number of restaurants are just a short ride away. All the restaurants Craig mentions are walk-able from the Shangri-La, though the walk to the Gallery is the longest. None of those places are open for breakfast. Isn't breakfast included in your room rate at the Shangri-La?
For Tongue Thai and Harmonique, you can catch the river ferry or Oriental boat to the Oriental Hotel. For Gallery Cafe, you can do the same for the Royal Orchid Sheraton. The boats may stop running after dinner, but a taxi or a pleasant walk back to the S-la will get you there.
If your are unfamiliar with Bangkok, you should know that the Oriental and ROS boats depart from the Taksin Pier next door to the Krungthep Wing of the Shangri La. The ROS boat especially, does not run that frequently and there may be a bit of a wait even for the Oriental boat. I know for sure that the "O" boat continues to run after sunset. I don't think walking in the area is particularly pleasant unless you know exactly where you are going, which you won't if you are unfamiliar with the area. You also have to deal with the heat. Taxis are very cheap and the folks at the Shang can and will instruct your driver where you need to go. Hopefully breakfast is included in your room rate as Kathie mentioned - the buffet there is very good.
Never take a tax unless the drver wll use the meter. If he refuses, get out of the car. Also, thge road from the S-la up to the Royal Orchid Sheraton is one way. It's up from the S-la to the ROS. Coming back, a taxi will have to sewing around. It's no big deal and will not cost anything extra to speak of.
all three of these restaurants are reasonable and very very good thai food... harmonique is probably my fav, but is closed on sundays... it is located on a small soi, number 36 i think???, just before you reach the huge post office on 'new road'...
personally i would take a taxi to all of them having gotten directions from the hotel....but you can walk...
tongue thai is directly in back of OP Place which is directly in back of the oriental....try the chicken and cashew....best anyplace...
gallery cafe is just around the corner from the royal orchid sheraton---some out back door of sheraton--street side---turn right, go to end of block, turn left and about 1/2 way down that block it is on the right...good massage upstairs i am told...
you can also walk to silom road and there are a number of places along there, especially at silom plaza...
for a special drink go to the sky bar at the top of the state building, corner of new road and silom...proper dress--no sandals or shorts
Another vote for Harmonique. Just great cashew chicken and pineapple fried rice (along with other things). Very informal. I'm not sure if it is walking distance but the taxi took less than five minutes, I think. Sirocco is also close by and I would definitely head up there for a drink and to see the view; very memorable.
sirocco=sky bar
Thanks for your suggestions. Our stay at the Shangri La does not include breakfast.
Opposite the main entrance to Shangri-La is an excellent Indian restaurant. Excellent food!
I second the SkyBar. What a view! Drinks are extremely pricey though so definitely pregame it.
join the sh-la FF club and i think that entitles you to breakfast which is one of bkk's best
